Turns out all this room needed was a little drama. πŸ’β€β™€οΈ

One accent wall later and she's serving personality, attitude, and just the right amount of extra.

Happy Pride Month, Breasties! 🌈

Around here, all families are welcome.

Whether you're breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping around the clock, combo feeding, using donor milk, or just trying to figure out why this tiny human seems determined to ignore all the books you readβ€”I'm here for you.

Families come in all shapes, sizes, and configurations, and so do feeding journeys. My job isn't to fit you into a box. It's to help you meet your goals, troubleshoot the chaos, and remind you that you're doing a better job than you think.

This month and every month, I'm proud to support LGBTQ+ parents and families as they navigate pregnancy, postpartum, and feeding their babies.

Now go drink some water, eat a snack, and tell someone you love them.πŸŒˆπŸ’•

All advice is NOT equal. This was on a post for health care workers about the craziest lab results they've seen.

If you're not familiar, 2.2 hemoglobin is extremely and life threatening anemia.

Breast milk is tailored to human infants. Commercial formula must meet specific nutrition requirements to ensure there's enough nutrition for babies to grow and development.

Now, there ARE commercial goat's milk formula. It is the same as cow's milk formula in terms of needing to meet specific requirements.

But these parents weren't using INFANT formula made from goat's milk. They were using goat milk formula, formula made to feed baby goats.... Baby goats do not have the same nutrition requirements as human infants. And neither do baby cows. This is why human infants NEED breast milk or appropriate formula as a substitute.

If you aren't breastfeeding for any reason, and you have questions about formula safely, please see an IBCLC (yes, lactation consultants know all about formula!), pediatric nutritionist, or as baby's pediatrician for options.

Do NOT give an infant under about 6 months anything except breast milk or approved formula without direct guidance from a professional.

Likely, these parents either a) heard the myth that goat's milk is similar to human milk b) confused goat's formula with human infant formula made from goat's milk or c) thought this was a cheaper and safe substitute.

πŸ‘‡πŸ½ have you ever heard of any unsafe infant feeding advice?

Chestfeeding is a term used by many transmasculine and non-binary parents to describe how they feed and nurture their children from their bodies. Some prefer the term nursing instead, while others prefer breastfeeding. We use all of these words, and our volunteer Leaders warmly accept whatever term a family chooses for their own experiences.

LLLC continues to use Mother and breastfeeding; those will never be erased. LLLC will use language that mirrors the language used by families we support. Essentially we are adding more chairs to our table, not taking any away.

The science behind the use of the term chestfeeding is not focused on human anatomy; it is the science of health communication, which requires using terms that are familiar and accepted by those being helped. Language is always evolving, in the breastfeeding and lactation world as elsewhere. Many of the terms used 20 or 30 years ago would be unfamiliar to parents today, and La Leche League must continue to adapt and evolve as language in the lactation area does as well.

Meeting those who seek our help and walking alongside them in their parenting journey is at the heart of La Leche League. Whether you breastfeed, chestfeed, or nurse your children or support a partner who does, we welcome you, and we will strive to ensure that your experience is reflected in what we say and how we say it.

Edit to add from Misty: Thank you Allison for this lovely post. All credit to my mom who some years ago on this very day endured a grueling labor and pushed out a respectable 8 lb 7 oz baby with, in her words, very broad shoulders πŸ€— thank you all for all the touching well wishes ❀️

Happy Birthday to the woman who somehow keeps babies coming, moms calm, and the rest of us functioning. 🀍✨

Working alongside you means getting to see firsthand just how much love, energy, patience, and heart you pour into every single family you care for. You show up at all hours, answer every question, hold space for people in their hardest and happiest moments, and somehow still make everyone feel safe and supported.

You are the definition of doing this work with your whole heart.

Thank you for trusting me to work beside you, for all the laughs, chaos, teamwork, coffee-fueled days, and for being such an incredible support to so many families in our community.

I hope this next year brings you all the love and care you so freely give to everyone else. You deserve it. 🫢

Happy Birthday to the best midwife around. πŸ–€
