🚛💊 Medication Review During DOT Exams

During a DOT physical, ALL medications must be reviewed — including:
✔️ Prescription medications
✔️ Over-the-counter medications
✔️ Herbal remedies
✔️ Supplements

To help your exam go smoothly, drivers should bring:

đź“‹ A current list of all medications, including:
• Name of medication
• Dosage amount
• Frequency taken

đź“„ Prescriber documentation when applicable

⚠️ Controlled substances will be discussed in greater detail in another post, but here are the basics:
• Schedule I drugs are prohibited
• Schedule II–V medications are restricted
• A valid prescription and medical clearance may be required confirming the medication does not affect safe driving

Some medications require additional confirmation from your medical provider to ensure they do not impair your ability to safely operate a commercial vehicle.

Being prepared helps avoid delays in your certification process and keeps you safely on the road. âś…

đźš› NEW VIDEO FOR CDL DRIVERS đźš›

A lot of drivers think the DOT urinalysis is a drug test—but that’s actually not what it’s for.

In this new video, Dr. Kler from Luxe Spine Center explains:
âś… What the DOT urinalysis actually screens for
âś… Why protein, blood, sugar, and specific gravity matter
âś… How glucose in the urine can affect your certification
âś… Why drug testing is separate from the DOT physical
âś… How a one-stop clinic can simplify the entire process

If you’re a commercial driver in the Tampa area, this is information you should know before your next DOT physical.

đźš› What Does a DOT Urinalysis Screen For? đźš›

If you’re a commercial driver, your DOT physical includes a required urinalysis—but it might not be what you think.

Here’s what we actually check during the exam:

🧪 Protein
May indicate kidney issues or underlying medical conditions.

🩸 Blood
Could be a sign of infection, kidney stones, or other concerns that may need follow-up.

🍬 Sugar (Glucose)
High levels can be a warning sign for diabetes.

đź’§ Specific Gravity
Measures how concentrated your urine is—this helps assess hydration and kidney function.

đź’ˇ Important to Know:
The DOT urinalysis is NOT a drug test. It is strictly used to screen for underlying health conditions that could impact your ability to drive safely.

However, drug screening may still be required by your employer or as part of a separate DOT-regulated testing program.

To keep things simple, make sure you schedule a DOT physical with a provider that is able to perform the DOT physical, urinalysis and drug screening simultaneously. This way you will only have to provide a urine sample one time all in one house.

Keeping you healthy and compliant is our top priority—on and off the road. We provide DOT physicals, urinalysis and drug screening all in one house.
