🔹After coming back from maternity leave following having her third child, Physical Therapist, Jess Zmoos felt it was important to talk about how PT can benefit newborns and new moms.

🔹Whether you are a new mom or well-seasoned, you often may still have questions “is this normal and how is my baby comparing to others his/her age?” Newborns grow so quickly and while well-check appointments with their P*P cover a lot, specific concerns like feeding (breast or bottle) or other developmental milestones may not be addressed until they are impacting your baby’s daily life. Maybe you have noticed a preference to looking one way, concerns about the shape of your baby’s head, breastfeeding questions and looking for optimal feeding positioning, or find your baby is fussy after a feed and have further questions. A PT evaluation can help you address some of these concerns rather than just monitoring or waiting. Early intervention with specific tailored activities can significantly improve outcomes given the rapid development which occurs in the early months of life.

🔹Jess specifically was having painful/lengthy feedings and noticing a side preference with her first born. She was assessed by an IBCLC and her son was diagnosed with a tongue tie. Since then, she has done more research and completed training to further her knowledge as a lactation informed physical therapist; bringing this specialty closer to home here in Northeast Iowa. Jess would love to share her knowledge with you so give her a call at our Sumner clinic today!

‼️Not to mention we have a pelvic health specialist at each location‼️

If you notice your child frequently trips, moves awkwardly, or struggles with balance during play, they may benefit from PT, and early intervention is the most effective way to prevent long-term issues. Movement is a Journey‼️

Most people think of physical therapy as something you do only after a surgery or major accident. In reality, you should think of your physical therapist as a movement consultant. Here are a few quick check ins to think about and discuss with your PT⬇️

🔹Injury Prevention
🔹Customized Planning
🔹Pain Management

The goal is to ensure your body is physically ready to take on the challenges of a busy, active summer. Don't wait for a small ache to become a season ending injury.

🔵Moving Better with Parkinson’s Disease🔵

If you or a loved one is living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), you know it’s more than just a tremor. It affects how you move, balance, and carry yourself. It can also bring on less obvious symptoms like fatigue, pain, and changes in your mood or memory.

While there isn’t a cure yet, Physical Therapy can help manage the symptoms and help improve day to day living through specialized treatments and strategies through the LSVT BIG Program.

🔹Building Strength: PD can cause muscles to weaken over time. We use targeted resistance training to build the strength you need for daily activities.

🔹”Thinking Big" for Better Movement: PD often makes movements smaller and slower (like shuffling feet or smaller handwriting). We use specialized programs, like LSVT BIG, to retrain your brain and body to use bigger, more intentional movement.

🔹Restoring Rhythm: Walking involves rhythmic movements, like swinging your arms. PD can disrupt this rhythm. Tools like ellipticals, bicycles, or even dance to help your body find its rhythm again.

🔹Balance and Posture: PD affects the brain's ability to process balance signals from your eyes and inner ear. We use stability challenges, like practicing on uneven surfaces or with your eyes closed to keep you steady on your feet and prevent falls.

🔹Managing Stiffness: Muscle rigidity is a common challenge with PD. Regular, focused stretching of the hips, hamstrings, and calves can reduce pain and keep you flexible.

Take the Next Step ➡️ Living with PD requires a proactive team. Whether you are newly diagnosed or have been managing PD for years, a physical therapist can provide the education and exercises you need to live well!
