The Basics-

What it is: A cataract is a natural clouding of the eye's lens that occurs as proteins break down and clump together, usually due to aging.Who it affects: More than 24 million Americans aged 40 and older have cataracts.

Common Symptoms-

Early on, you may not notice changes, but as cataracts develop, look out for:
Blurred, foggy, or dim vision.Difficulty seeing at night.Increased glare or halos around lights.Faded or yellowed colors.Frequent changes in glasses or contact prescriptions.

Risk Factors-

While aging is the primary cause, you can manage other contributing risk factors, which include:

Long-term UV sun exposure without proper eye protection, Diabetes, smoking, long-term steroid use. Family history and eye injuries.

Actionable Steps-

The most important step in protecting your vision is early detection.

Schedule an Eye Exam:
The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends that adults get a comprehensive eye exam by age 40 to check for early signs of cataracts and other diseases.Protect Your Eyes: Wear high-quality sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB radiation when you are outdoors.Utilize Resources: For more information, educational factsheets, or financial assistance programs, visit PreventBlindness.org

Eye floaters are tiny specks, threads, or cobwebs that drift through your field of vision. They occur when the vitreous (the gel-like fluid inside the eye) shrinks or changes with age, causing microscopic collagen fibers to clump together and cast shadows onto the retina.

When to See a Doctor

While most floaters are harmless nuisances that fade with time, a sudden increase in the number of floaters, a new large floater (like a Weiss ring), or the onset of bright flashes of light can signal a retinal tear or detachment. If you experience sudden, new floaters, contact an eye specialist (optometrist or ophthalmologist) immediately.

Why Healthy Vision Deserves Attention

Many common eye conditions—like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration—develop gradually and without early symptoms. That’s why May is the perfect time to raise awareness about proactive vision care and how regular exams can catch issues before they affect your daily life.

Top Vision Threats to Watch Out For

Digital Eye Strain from prolonged screen time UV Exposure from sunlight without proper protection

Poor Diet lacking vision-boosting nutrients like lutein and omega-3s

Chronic Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can damage eye health

Skipping Eye Exams, which delays detection of treatable conditions

5 Simple Habits for Healthier Eyes

Get Regular Eye Exams – Schedule a comprehensive exam with Kellis Eye & Laser Center to catch issues early.

Eat for Your Eyes – Include leafy greens, colorful vegetables, fish, and nuts in your diet.

Wear Sunglasses – Choose lenses with 100% UVA/UVB protection to guard against sun damage.

Rest Your Eyes – Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Quit Smoking – Smoking increases the risk of vision loss due to AMD and cataracts.

The Connection Between Eye Health and Overall Wellness

Vision is deeply connected to your overall health. Eye exams can reveal signs of systemic conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and even certain cancers. That’s why taking care of your eyes isn’t just about vision—it’s about your total well-being. Your eyes are also critical to maintaining independence, productivity, and mental health, especially as we age. Protecting them now helps ensure a healthier future.
