Nurse Hannah Fleming stood at a patient’s bedside as he prepared for liver transplant surgery. He was scared, overwhelmed, and unsure of what would come next. Hannah understands those feelings firsthand as a liver transplant recipient herself.⁣
⁣
Hannah was born with biliary atresia, a rare, life‑threatening liver disease that affects newborn infants. By five months old, local doctors feared she wouldn’t survive long enough to receive a transplant.⁣
⁣
“They told my parents I was living on borrowed time,” she says.⁣
⁣
Hannah’s family was preparing to take her home when her mother asked for one more night, to pack up their hotel room and rest before the four‑hour drive. “That one more night saved my life,” Hannah says.⁣
⁣
At 3 a.m., a liver became available. Hours later, an eight‑hour transplant surgery changed everything. It shaped her purpose and every life chapter that followed.⁣
⁣
Growing up, Hannah spent much of her childhood at medical appointments, forming close bonds with her care team. Small rituals, like choosing a sticker at the end of each visit, became moments of comfort she still remembers today.⁣
⁣
“The hospital began to feel like home,” she says.⁣
⁣
Inspired by caregivers, and by two grandmothers who were nurses, Hannah found her calling. Today, she’s an operating room transplant nurse at our main campus, caring for patients with a unique perspective.⁣
⁣
“Having a liver transplant has influenced everything I do, in my work and my personal life,” she says. “This work is never just another day.”⁣
⁣
Outside the hospital, Hannah trains for the New York City Marathon with the American Liver Foundation. “I’m running for everyone who’s still waiting for their second chance,” she says.⁣
⁣
And she never forgets the one who made hers possible. “I wouldn’t be here today without my donor hero and their family.”
