The Michigan Osteopathic Association mourns the passing of William Anderson, DO; a distinguished osteopathic physician, civil rights leader, and dedicated advocate for the profession.

Dr. Anderson’s extraordinary legacy reached far beyond the practice of medicine. During the Civil Rights Movement, he played a pivotal role in the fight for equality as a leader of the Albany Movement in Georgia, working to challenge segregation and advance voting rights. His courage, leadership, and commitment to justice remained defining qualities throughout his life.

Dr. Anderson was also a devoted member and leader within the Michigan Osteopathic Association, giving his time and voice in service to Michigan’s osteopathic physicians and helping advance the profession he so deeply valued. His involvement with the MOA was another reflection of his lifelong commitment to leadership, advocacy, and service to others.

Few lives have touched so many areas of service. Through medicine, civil rights, and osteopathic leadership, Dr. Anderson leaves an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations.

The MOA extends our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Anderson’s family, friends, colleagues, and all those whose lives he touched. We are proud to honor the remarkable life and legacy of William Anderson, DO.

Advocacy is one of the most important ways we serve our members, and ultimately, the patients of Michigan.

We’re honored that MOA Past President Dr. Emily Hurst represented the Michigan Osteopathic Association at the signing of House Bill 5455, a significant step forward for physician licensure and patient access to care.

Moments like these remind us that when physicians have a seat at the table, meaningful change happens.
