Breastfeeding has a learning curve, but persistent pain isn’t something you have to endure. 🤍

Cracking, bleeding, or ongoing ni**le sensitivity are all reasons to take a closer look at what’s happening.

Pain is a signal worth paying attention to, not something you need to push through.

Cold and flu season + breastfeeding = a whole new level of parenting. 🤧🤱

When you’re sick, the last thing you want to worry about is if you can keep feeding your baby or take something to help yourself feel better.

Here’s your reminder..

🤍 You can usually continue breastfeeding when you’re sick.

🤍 Your milk continues to provide important immune support.

🤍 Many medications are compatible with breastfeeding, but certain ingredients deserve extra attention.

🤍 You deserve rest, relief, and support, too.

And if your baby gets sick? Keep offering milk, watch hydration and feeding, and reach out to their pediatrician with concerns.

Save this post for the next round of sniffles, and send it to a breastfeeding friend!

Here is a great example of some of the nuance that can come with healing after an oral release.

This sweet baby had a release less than 7 days earlier. At follow up, we observed what appeared to be early tissue readhesion.

Healing after a frenotomy isn’t always perfectly predictable, and this wasn’t about blaming the parent or assuming they had done something wrong. The family had been following the aftercare plan provided to them.

The release provider was able to separate the newly adhered tissue, and a greater range of motion was observed. 👀

Feeding support didn’t stop there.

During all of this, we worked on bottle feeding support to reduce air intake and improve overall comfort. Mum was also very interested in helping baby return to the breast, while respecting that her baby’s temperament was creating some challenges outside of her control.

She was a beacon of patience. 🤍

When we parted ways, Mum felt comfortable with where they were with feeding and opportunities at the breast. 🫶

You’ve got the car seat, the hospital bag, and the birth plan. Have you thought about breastfeeding? 🤍

A little prenatal breastfeeding education can go a long way toward feeling confident and prepared before baby arrives.

Adjusting the plan isn’t failing.

It’s meeting your baby, body and life where they are.

Some of my favorite affirmations sound like..

“My feeding journey doesn’t have to look the way I imagined to still be meaningful and successful.”

“Confidence isn’t sticking to the original plan. Sometimes it’s trusting myself enough to change it.”

“Acceptance can sound like.. This isn’t what I pictured, but I can still find my way forward.”

I know this sounds 🤢 but it’s true! Feeding concerns aren’t always an overnight fix.

Sometimes simple changes like positioning, latch adjustments, pacing, or giving your baby a little more time to organize their movements can make a feed feel better.

🌱 progress doesn’t have to mean everything suddenly looks perfect.

One less painful latch.
A little more milk transferred.
Less clicking.
A calmer bottle.
One feed that felt easier than yesterday.

Those small changes give us information, too. They help us figure out what’s working, what still needs support, and whether we need to look a little deeper.

One better feed per day is still movement in the right direction. 🫶

pregnancy and infant loss 🤍

Lactation can be an unexpected part of pregnancy or infant loss.

For some parents, this can be incredibly distressing. For others, continuing to express milk may feel comforting or meaningful. Experiences and preferences are highly individual.

For families that chose to stop lactation, care is full of comfort measures tailored to the mum.

🧘‍♂️ cold compress for swelling and discomfort
🧘‍♂️ comfortable bra and clothes without binding
🧘‍♂️ hydration and nourishment for healing
🧘‍♂️ educational support for engorgement

And stopping milk production isn’t the only option.

Some families choose to continue expressing temporarily, keep milk as part of honoring, or milk donation.

Families have shared that continuing lactation after loss has also been described as a meaningful part of their grieving experience.

The support isn’t to tell a family what to do with their milk.

It’s to make sure they know they have options and that support is available for whichever option they choose.
