GLP-1s: You've Probably Heard About Them… But What Are They Exactly?

By now, you’ve probably heard the term GLP-1 everywhere; but what exactly is a GLP-1?
GLP-1 is a hormone naturally made in your body. It helps regulate blood sugar, appetite, and digestion.

GLP-1 medications work by mimicking some of the effects of this hormone. They can help control blood sugar, reduce appetite, and slow the movement of food through the stomach, which can help you feel full longer.

You may know some of these medications by names like Ozempic®, Wegovy®, or other medications in this class.

So what does all of this mean for your digestive system? Well, that’s where things get interesting. 👀

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a closer look at GLP-1 medications and your GI health; including common digestive side effects, constipation, nausea, and what symptoms are worth discussing with your doctor.

What an incredible evening at the Oklahoma County Medical Society Women in Medicine event!

It was inspiring to see so many talented women physicians come together to connect, mentor, and celebrate one another. The energy in the room was a powerful reminder that when women support women, we strengthen not only our profession but also the care we provide to our patients and communities.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a tremendous success. Building meaningful relationships, sharing experiences, and lifting each other up are what leadership is all about.

I’m grateful to be part of a medical community that values collaboration, mentorship, and creating opportunities for the next generation of women in medicine. Here’s to continuing to inspire, empower, and lead—together.

Teaching the next generation of healthcare providers is one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking with the Physician Assistant students at Oklahoma City University, sharing a lecture on liver cirrhosis—from recognizing early disease and understanding complications to evidence-based management and the importance of timely referral for transplant evaluation.

Medicine is constantly evolving, but one thing remains the same: investing in education today leads to better patient care tomorrow.

Thank you to the faculty and students at OCU PA School for the warm welcome, thoughtful questions, and engaging discussion. Wishing you all the very best as you continue your journey toward becoming exceptional clinicians.
