Some of the heaviest things people carry are the ones they carry alone. This September 10th is World Su***de Prevention Day, a reminder that showing up for the people around us can matter more than we realize. A phone call. A text that says "thinking of you." Sitting with someone in a hard moment instead of trying to fix it.

At Choices For Life, we see it every day: connection is protective. It's part of why our support doesn't stop at 5pm β€” our team is here for the families and young people we serve, even after hours, because crisis doesn't run on a schedule.

If you or someone you love is struggling, you don't have to navigate it alone - πŸ“ž 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline β€” available 24/7.

Signs that go beyond normal adjustment: sleep that stays disrupted past the first couple weeks, a sudden drop-off in appetite, withdrawing from things they used to enjoy, or a return of behaviors you thought you'd moved past. None of these mean something is wrong with your child, they're often the nervous system's way of processing a change before words catch up.

The first few weeks of school are behind you, and now comes the part nobody warns foster parents about: the routine either sticks, or it slips. New teachers, new schedules, and a kid who's still figuring out where they fit can bring old anxieties back up right when things are starting to feel steady.

A few things that help: keep morning and evening routines as predictable as possible, even on hard days. Give advance notice before any schedule change, even small ones. And check in about school β€” not just "how was it," but specific, low-pressure questions about lunch, recess, or a teacher's name.

Consistency is the thing kids in placement can hold onto when everything else has changed. You don't have to get it perfect. You just have to keep showing up the same way, day after day. πŸ’š

Self Care Sunday Tip! πŸ’š Ask, β€œDo you want to talk about it, or do you want a distraction?” One question. It hands the choice back to the kid instead of assuming what they need, and that small bit of control can make all the difference after a hard day.

Making friends at a new school is hard for any kid. For a child who's also processing a new home, it can feel like one more thing to figure out alone. A few ways foster parents can help without hovering:

πŸ§ƒ Practice simple conversation starters together before the first day.
🎨 Help them find one low-pressure way in β€” clubs, art, sports, lunch groups.
πŸ‘‚ Ask open questions after school ("Who'd you sit with today?") instead of "Did you make friends?"
πŸ•°οΈ Give it weeks, not days. Friendships take time to build, especially with trust still forming!

Connection at school is one more form of stability. It's worth the patience it takes. πŸ’š
