August is National Wellness Month, and wellness is about more than taking care of our physical health. It also means caring for our mental and emotional well-being—and knowing when we need support from others.

For people living with tinnitus, that support can be especially important. A sound no one else can hear can be difficult to explain, frustrating to live with, and isolating when it feels like others don’t understand.

That’s why Hough Ear Institute created Tinnitus Together, a free support group where people living with tinnitus can connect with others who understand, share experiences and helpful strategies, learn from guest speakers, and simply know they aren’t facing it alone.

This National Wellness Month, remember: community can be an important part of taking care of yourself. 💙

Accessibility matters everywhere—in person and online. ♿💻

In our physical spaces, accessibility can mean ramps, clear signage, assistive listening systems, interpreters, captions, and making sure people can communicate in the way that works best for them.

But accessibility shouldn’t stop when someone opens a website, reads an email, downloads a document, or watches a video.

Digital accessibility can include things like adding captions to videos, describing images, creating accessible documents, designing websites that work with assistive technology, and making information easier for everyone to navigate and understand.

The good news? You don’t have to be an accessibility expert to start learning.

Our friends at Oklahoma ABLE Tech offer FREE, self-paced digital accessibility courses covering topics like disability awareness, accessible documents, inclusive web design, complex image descriptions, and more. You can even earn a certificate for each course you complete.

Whether you run a business, nonprofit, school, website, or social media account, there are practical steps you can take to make your information more accessible.

This International Youth Day, we’re celebrating the curiosity, creativity, and potential of young people.

At Hough Ear Institute, one of the ways we invest in the next generation is through our annual Hough Science Camp, where students get hands-on experience with STEAM topics and explore what future careers in science, health, technology, and research could look like.

From experiments and lab activities to creative problem-solving, our goal is to help students see that science is not just something they read about in a textbook—it is something they can do, question, build, and imagine themselves being part of.

The future of research, medicine, innovation, and service depends on today’s young learners. We’re grateful for every opportunity to help spark that interest.

Planning to see The Odyssey in theaters? You may want to pack earplugs with your popcorn. 🎬👂

The new Christopher Nolan film has people talking—not only about the epic visuals, but also about how loud some theater screenings feel.

We’re not saying you need to skip the big-screen experience. Just protect your ears while you enjoy it.

Movie theaters can get loud, especially during trailers, action scenes, IMAX screenings, and premium formats. A good rule of thumb: if the sound feels uncomfortable, painfully loud, or leaves your ears ringing afterward, it’s worth taking seriously.

Before you go:

✅ Bring foam or high-fidelity earplugs
✅ Sit farther away from the speakers when possible
✅ Step out briefly if a scene feels painfully loud
✅ Use a sound-level app if you’re curious
✅ Pay attention to ringing, muffled hearing, or discomfort afterward

Big movies are meant to be immersive. Hearing protection just helps make sure you can keep enjoying the sounds you love long after the credits roll.

This week kicks off OSHA’s Safe + Sound Week, a nationwide effort to recognize and strengthen workplace safety and health programs.

For many workplaces, safety means hard hats, gloves, training, and emergency plans—but hearing protection should be part of the conversation, too.

From construction and manufacturing to agriculture, energy, landscaping, transportation, and live events, loud work environments can put employees at risk for long-term hearing damage and tinnitus. And hearing health is connected to more than sound—it can affect communication, focus, quality of life, and brain health over time.

This week is a great opportunity for workplace leaders to ask:

✅ Are our workers exposed to hazardous noise?
✅ Do they have access to proper hearing protection?
✅ Are we creating a culture where safety is easy to practice?
✅ Are we protecting people’s long-term health, not just preventing immediate injuries?

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

For us, this day is not about checking a box or using the right words. It is a day to honor the beauty, strength, wisdom, languages, traditions, leadership, and living cultures of Indigenous peoples around the world.

Here in Oklahoma, that recognition is especially meaningful. Our state is deeply shaped by Native nations, communities, families, artists, educators, health leaders, and culture keepers whose contributions continue to enrich all of us.

At Hough Ear Institute, we believe healthy communities are built through respect, connection, listening, and partnership. Today, we celebrate Indigenous cultures not as history alone, but as living, vibrant, and essential parts of Oklahoma’s present and future.

Today, on Purple Heart Day, we honor the brave service members who were wounded or killed in service to our country.

Their courage, sacrifice, and service deserve our deep gratitude—not only today, but every day.

At Hough Ear Institute, we are especially mindful of the lasting impacts military service can have on hearing health. From combat and training to aircraft, machinery, and explosives, many veterans have experienced noise exposure that can contribute to hearing loss and tinnitus.

To all Purple Heart recipients, their families, and the loved ones of those who did not return home: thank you.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

Thinking Thursday: What is a sound from your childhood that you wish you could hear again—or that is still special to you today?

Maybe it’s the screen door closing at your grandparents’ house, cicadas on a summer evening, a church bell, the ice cream truck, baseball on the radio, rain on a tin roof, your parents’ voice, or music playing from another room.

Sounds have a powerful way of carrying memories. They connect us to people, places, and moments we never want to lose.

At Hough Ear Institute, that connection is part of why hearing health matters so much.

What childhood sound comes to mind for you?

Back-to-school season is here in Oklahoma! 🎒✏️

Fun fact: “first day of school” is not the same day across the state. Some Oklahoma students are already heading back as early as the first week of August, while many metro-area districts start around mid-August. In our quick look, OKCPS begins August 11, several metro districts begin August 13, and Tulsa Public Schools starts August 19.

So whether your family is already packing lunches, still buying school supplies, or trying to squeeze in one last summer memory, we’re wishing Oklahoma students, teachers, school staff, and families a great year ahead.

Here’s to curiosity, learning, friendships, and all the big and small moments that make a school year memorable.

Back-to-school season is a great time to check in on your child’s hearing health. 🎒👂

Kids depend on hearing every day—for listening in class, following instructions, building language, joining conversations, and staying connected with friends.

Here are 3 things parents can do as school starts:

✅ 1. Make sure hearing screenings are up to date.
Children’s hearing can change over time. Ask your child’s school or pediatrician whether they are due for a screening.

✅ 2. Watch for signs of hearing trouble.
Turning up the volume, asking “what?” often, struggling to follow directions, seeming distracted, or having trouble in class can sometimes point to hearing concerns.

✅ 3. Pay attention after summer ear issues.
Swimming, ear infections, and lingering ear pain or fullness can sometimes affect how well a child hears. If your child has ongoing ear pain, drainage, muffled hearing, or seems to be struggling to hear after an infection, it may be time to check in with a healthcare professional.

A good school year starts with being able to hear, learn, and connect.
