September has been proclaimed Sepsis Awareness Month in Oklahoma by Gov. Kevin Stitt, recognizing the importance of increasing awareness about sepsis and the need for early recognition and treatment.

Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to an infection and can quickly lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death. Oklahomans can remember the warning signs with TIME:
🩺 T = Temperature higher or lower than normal
🦠 I = Infection that may be worsening
🧠 M = Mental decline, confusion, or difficulty waking up
⚠️ E = Extremely ill, severe pain, or shortness of breath

If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms, especially with an infection, seek medical attention immediately. Throughout September, hospitals and healthcare professionals are encouraged to increase awareness of sepsis prevention, warning signs, and the importance of seeking prompt medical care. DRH Health in Duncan is helping introduce students across southwestern Oklahoma to the wide range of career opportunities available in health care through its Exploring Healthcare Career Opportunities (EHCO) Program.

Since launching in 2022, the program has connected students from eighth grade through college with health care professionals through classroom presentations, hospital tours, job shadowing, internships and hands-on career exploration. EHCO recently served more than 800 students in a year, helping students explore both clinical and nonclinical health care careers and better understand opportunities to build a future in their communities.

In recognition of National Community Health Worker Awareness Week, the Oklahoma Hospital Association is highlighting the community health workers serving patients and communities across Oklahoma.

Through multiple funding sources, OHA is integrating 40 community health workers into hospitals across the state. CHWs help connect patients with resources such as food, transportation, housing, healthcare services, medications and other support that can address barriers to better health.

Their work strengthens the connection between hospitals, public health and communities while helping patients navigate the unique challenges that can affect their health and well-being. Thank you to all of Oklahoma’s community health workers for the important work you do every day.

The Republican gubernatorial runoff is Aug. 25. Hear directly from runoff candidates Gentner Drummond and Mike Mazzei as they discuss issues important to Oklahoma healthcare, including the challenges facing hospitals, healthcare professionals and patients across the state.
