Robert Weinschenk, M.D. Robert Weinschenk, M.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Orthopedic oncology surgeon in Oklahoma City, OK with clinical focus on bone and soft tissue sarcomas, metastatic disease, as well as benign bone and soft tissue tumors. He specializes in musculoskeletal oncology, focusing on benign and malignant tumors of the extremities and pelvis. His clinical interests also include osteoarthritis and traumatic skeletal injuries. al degree at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple and received advanced training in musculoskeletal oncology through a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Following the traditional clinical year, Dr. Weinschenk remained at MD Anderson for an additional year dedicated to clinical and translational research. He joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2021. He is designated as a Clinical Scholar at UT Southwestern, with substantial efforts dedicated to research in addition to his clinical practice. His primary research interests involve applications of 3D printing to biomechanical studies, patient education, and resident/student training.

New publication alert!

Thanks to some diligent work from some awesome medical students, we are pleased to announce that our systematic review looking at diffusion-weighted MRI for bone and soft tissue tumors is hot off the press! This exciting MRI technology, which essentially boils down to the diffusion of water molecules, can help us distinguish amongst various types of malignancies, differentiate benign from malignant tumors, and also assess response to treatment! Its use is still evolving over time, but is one of the many exciting tools we have in our arsenal to help us beat cancer!

Didn’t take too many photos this year, but in New Orleans was outstanding!

I had the privilege of serving as a mentor in AAOS Launchpad, an educational initiative for senior residents as they prepare for their board exams and transition into fellowship and practice.

Other major highlights this year:
-Awesome lectures and symposiums
-The Terminator was the presidential guest speaker!
-Got to go to the New Orleans Jazz Museum and among other highlights, saved a photo of Sidney Bechet’s sax (for anyone who doesn’t know what a big jazz nerd I am, that was a big deal for me!)
-Awesome time exploring and eating great food with the family!

Had a great time at the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Annual Meeting in Mexico City! I had the privilege of participating in a hands on workshop exploring innovations in pelvic fixation for oncology patients and was able to showcase some of the research we have done with diffusion-weighted MRI for myeloma patients. This is always a great conference to catch up with colleagues and friends and learn the latest and greatest in musculoskeletal oncology. I also found some time to try some of the amazing food Mexico City has to offer!

First day at OU Health is in the books! I am very excited to begin this new chapter. I am fortunate to already have some exciting challenges on the horizon, both clinically and with research! I also had the privilege of traveling to the Norman campus a few days ago to talk with some folks about some fun collaborations with 3-D printing and biomechanics research. Fortunately, my skeleton, Bob, has also arrived safely! Looking forward to working with the rest of the team and residents here at OU!
