Chronic stress is one of the most common health complaints of modern life, and it is linked to problems ranging from poor sleep and weakened immunity to heart disease. Research consistently shows that small, sustainable changes, such as drinking more water, moving regularly, sleeping well and taking time to switch off, have a measurable effect on long-term health. National Wellness Month matters because it reframes self-care as a routine and accessible practice rather than an occasional indulgence, encouraging people to build habits that last well beyond August.

The No. 1 cause of death for women? Cardiovascular disease. 💔

It takes the lives of more women than all forms of cancer combined.

Not every health threat is easy to spot.
Screening tests can prevent some cancers or catch them early, often before symptoms appear and when treatment is more likely to work best.
Talk with your doctor about which screenings are right for you and when to get them.
Another threat that's easy to miss: too much UV exposure from the sun, which can lead to skin cancer.
Simple options like shade, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, protective clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher can help lower your risk.

Sharks get a lot of attention.
But some of the biggest threats to your health don’t live in the ocean.
Heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes are among the leading causes of illness, disability, and death in the United States. Many chronic diseases share common risk factors. Healthy habits, along with routine preventive care and recommended screenings, can help reduce your risk.
This Shark Week, take a moment to think beyond the beach. Knowing your health risks is an important step toward protecting your long-term health.
What you can do: Talk with your doctor about your health risks, family health history, and the preventive care and screenings that are right for you.

The risk of a shark attack is rare. The risk of prediabetes? About 2 in 5 U.S. adults.

Prediabetes usually has no symptoms, but knowing your risk is the first step toward preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes.

Make healthy lifestyle changes to help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by:
• Eating healthier
• Being more physically active
• Losing weight if recommended

What you can do today: Take CDC's 1-minute Prediabetes Risk Test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org and talk with your doctor if you're at risk.
