Pause before Panic. Start by learning.

When a child displays a sexual behavior that concerns an adult, the first reaction may be confusion, fear, or worry.

But not every sexual behavior in childhood is problematic.

Children's sexual development begins early, and behaviors can range from normative to cautionary to problematic. Understanding a child's developmental stage, the circumstances surrounding the behavior, and how the child responds to adult guidance can help determine what kind of support may be needed.

The goal isn't to label a child. The goal is to understand the behavior, keep children safe, and provide the right support.

❓ FAQ: Can Problematic Sexual Behavior (PSB) Be Prevented?

Yes. 🌳 Education, early identification, and early intervention can play an important role in preventing problematic sexual behavior and supporting healthy development in children and youth.

Understanding what is developmentally typical—and recognizing when behavior may be concerning—can help caregivers, educators, and professionals respond early and appropriately.

Prevention starts with knowledge. When adults have the right information and resources, they can help create safe, supportive environments where children and youth can learn healthy boundaries, relationships, and behaviors.

We're proud to recognize Karen Hill, EdD, LPC-A—or simply Karen to the many colleagues and professionals who have had the privilege of working alongside her.

As a PSB-S Senior Leader Facilitator, Dr. Hill does more than provide training—she builds community. She brings together supervisors, team leaders, and organizational leaders from across the country, creating a collaborative space where they can learn from one another, share challenges, celebrate successes, and strengthen their ability to bring evidence-based PSB services to the children, youth, and families in their local communities.

Karen is an exceptional facilitator, an outstanding practitioner, and an inspiring leader whose passion for supporting others is evident in every training and conversation. Her commitment to fostering confident, connected leaders helps strengthen teams and expand access to high-quality care nationwide.
