Therapy can be a game-changer, but remember, the magic doesn't stop when you step out of your therapist's office. It's the 'after' that can truly amplify the benefits of your therapy sessions and bolster your mental health.

Here are four ideas from our therapists on how to reduce the ‘therapy hangover’ and get the most out of your sessions.

What do you like to do post-session to take care of yourself?

Let’s bust some therapy myths. 🚫🧠

Not every struggling athlete looks burned out. Sometimes it shows up as irritability. Sometimes it's a sudden lack of motivation. Sometimes it's a kid who used to love their sport but now dreads practice, seems emotionally checked out, or just doesn't seem like themselves. It's easy to assume they're being lazy, distracted, or going through a phase. But burnout, anxiety, and performance pressure can affect athletes at every level. If something feels different, trust that instinct. A simple conversation can open the door to support long before things reach a breaking point.

Summer can make it seem like everyone else is having the best few months of their life. Every scroll brings another vacation, another celebration, another picture-perfect moment. Meanwhile, real life is still happening. Bills still need to be paid. Work still needs to get done. Relationships still have hard moments. Mental health struggles don't disappear just because it's sunny outside. When we compare our everyday lives to someone else's carefully selected moments, it's easy to feel like we're missing out or falling behind. The truth is that most people are carrying things you can't see through a screen. If social media has been leaving you feeling worse instead of more connected, that feeling is worth paying attention to.

It's easy to think that focusing on one sport as early as possible is the key to success. But for many young athletes, playing multiple sports can build physical skills, confidence, adaptability, and friendships that last beyond the season. Early specialization may increase the risk of burnout, injury, anxiety, lower self-esteem, and losing the joy that made sports fun in the first place. Parents and coaches also play an important role. Too much pressure, or too little involvement, can affect an athlete's mental well-being. The goal isn't perfection. It's creating an environment where young people can grow, enjoy the game, and ask for support when they need it.

If sports are starting to affect your child's mental health, connecting with a therapist can be a helpful next step. Learn more at https://bit.ly/44CFKLx
