🌡️ HEAT WAVE SAFETY ALERT

This week's extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable - it can be dangerous.

When temperatures are high and humidity rises, your body has a much harder time cooling itself. Sweat can't evaporate as effectively, meaning heat exhaustion and heat stroke can develop faster than many people realize.

⚠️Know the warning signs:

Heat Exhaustion
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Muscle cramps
• Weakness
• Nausea

➡️ Move to a cool area, loosen clothing, and begin cooling the person while encouraging fluids if they are alert.

Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency)
• Confusion
• Slurred speech
• Loss of consciousness
• Hot, red skin
• Seizures
• Body temperature above 103°F

🚑 Call 911 immediately. Heat stroke can be life-threatening.

💧 Remember: Staying hydrated is only part of the solution. During periods of extreme heat and humidity, many people need to take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to allow their bodies to cool down.

✅ Drink water throughout the day.
✅ Take breaks before you feel overheated.
✅ Watch out for your coworkers.
✅ Never try to "push through" the warning signs.

🔥 DANGEROUS HEAT: Know the Difference Between Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke

This week's heat isn't just uncomfortable - it's dangerous.

When high temperatures combine with high humidity, your body loses one of its most important cooling mechanisms. Normally, sweat evaporates and cools your skin. But when the air is already saturated with moisture, sweat can't evaporate efficiently. Your body begins to trap heat, causing your core temperature to rise quickly.

That means this isn't just about drinking water anymore.

Even well-hydrated workers, athletes, first responders, and anyone spending time outdoors can develop heat-related illness if they don't periodically get into an air-conditioned or otherwise cooler environment.

⚠️ Know the warning signs:

**Heat Exhaustion**
• Heavy sweating
• Dizziness or headache
• Nausea
• Weakness
• Thirst
• Fast, weak pulse

➡️ Move to a cool place immediately, loosen clothing, cool the body, sip water, and seek medical attention if symptoms don't improve.

🚨 Heat Stroke is a Medical Emergency
• Hot, dry skin (or skin that feels very hot)
• Confusion or unusual behavior
• Loss of consciousness
• Fast, strong pulse
• Body temperature of 103°F or higher

➡️ Call 911 immediately. Begin cooling the person while waiting for emergency responders.

Protect yourself and your crew:
✅ Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
✅ Drink water consistently - but remember, water alone isn't enough in extreme humidity.
✅ Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
✅ Watch for changes in your coworkers. Heat illness can come on quickly, and the affected person may not recognize what's happening.

Before you head out to celebrate, take a moment to think safety:

🎆 Leave fireworks to the professionals whenever possible.
🔥 Keep grills away from homes, decks, and anything that can catch fire.
🚗 Buckle up, drive distraction-free, and always have a designated sober driver.
🌊 Wear a life jacket when boating and keep a close eye on children near the water.
☀️ Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take breaks from the heat.

The best celebration is one where everyone makes it home safely.

It’s been a busy season for the JLN Associates, LLC Safety team. From planned outages to unexpected emergency support, our crews have been traveling across the country helping clients keep projects moving safely.
Whether we’re providing safety oversight, rescue support, or field leadership in high-risk environments, our focus stays the same - protecting people, supporting operations, and recognizing Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) exposure indicators before incidents occur. Identifying these high-risk trends in the field helps strengthen future performance, improve planning, and support safer operations overall.
