The recent decision by the Supreme Court of the United States allowing broader use of so-called “conversion therapy” is deeply concerning.

These practices--efforts to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity--are not supported by science and are inconsistent with ethical mental health care.
From a trauma-informed perspective, the risks are clear. Experiences involving shame, identity invalidation or pressure to change who someone is, can create lasting psychological harm. For many people, especially young people, this can contribute to anxiety, depression and increased risk of self-harm.

Mental health care should help people feel safer, more whole, and better able to function-- not create additional harm.

EMDRIA supports evidence-based, trauma-informed care that affirms each person’s identity and promotes healing, resilience and well-being. We will continue to advocate for policies and practices that prevent trauma, reduce harm and ensure access to affirming care.
