I am thrilled to add an extremely rare 54-postcard collection depicting the WWII Era United States Theater Mortuary to my collection.

This remarkable group of original photographs offers a seldom-seen glimpse inside a U.S. military mortuary operation, documenting its facilities, interiors, equipment, and surrounding grounds. The entire set comes from the estate postcard collection of the late Dr. Bruce David Nelson of Portland, Maine, making its preservation together as one collection all the more special, and quite the investment, too.

A truly extraordinary piece of WWII and American funeral and mortuary history that I’m honored to preserve in my collection.

An excerpt from the obituary of Dr. Nelson, who died earlier this year:

“Bruce’s love of Maine, all things historical, antiques and art, evolved into what would become his life passion and second career – antique postcard collecting. Bruce traveled far and wide searching for rare cards, and in the process built a community of dear friends, whom he referred to as his “postcard buddies.” Anyone who met him was certain to learn a bit about the unique histories hidden in these small paper treasures. For years he created monthly postcard exhibits at Mercy Hospital highlighting a broad range of topics, from the 1918 Flu pandemic to rare Christmas greetings to cards displaying the first airplanes. He was a monthly contributing writer for the Postcard Collector’s Journal, covering hundreds of different postcard topics over the 15 plus years of his tenure. “

This morning, I had the distinct privilege of serving as the funeral director for what can only be described as a once in a lifetime experience.

Mrs. Fernandez was laid to rest today within the historic 1912 Jose Fernandez Family Mausoleum in the Old City Cemetery of Brownsville. The mausoleum had remained sealed since its last entombment 77 years ago in 1949, when the now-defunct Hinkley Mortuary conducted the service. Nobody alive today knew what was truly down below the granite capstone, and nobody would have guessed an entire 14 foot chamber existed beneath it.

An entombment of this nature required extensive planning, coordination, and a tremendous amount of manpower. From carefully opening the crypt to safely preparing it for use, every step demanded precision, respect, and teamwork.

As funeral directors, we are often entrusted with helping families through extraordinary moments, but opportunities to participate in the reopening of a historic family mausoleum that has not been entered in nearly eight decades are exceedingly rare, especially since it may possibly be the only of its kind in the entire Rio Grande Valley. It was truly an honor to have been entrusted with the care of Mrs. Fernandez by her beloved husband, Mr. Eugene Fernandez, who has since become a dear friend.

Some experiences remind you just how unique and meaningful this profession truly is. Today was undoubtedly one of them. Thank you to my Darling-Mouser Staff and to all that participated this morning.
