Remembering my 2nd great-grandaunt, Mary Buitureira Sloss, who passed away on this day 61 years ago.

Mary, the sister of my great-great-grandfather Fulgencio, holds a unique place in Brownsville history. For 35 years, she served as City Sexton of the historic Brownsville City Cemetery, caring for one of our community’s oldest and most significant burial grounds. Her family’s tradition of public service continued through her son, Jesse W. Sloss, Sr., who served the City of Brownsville for 29 years as City Secretary, two years as City Manager, and four years as a City Commissioner.

One particularly meaningful connection that I now share in correlation to her work occurred in April 1949, when Mary presided over the last entombment within the underground Fernandez Family catacomb within the city cemetery.

Last month, in August 2026, I had the distinct privilege of presiding over the entombment of Mrs. Fernandez within that very same catacomb, when it was opened for the first time since it had last been opened when Mary stood there 77 years ago.

For me, it is a remarkable intersection of Brownsville history, family history, and the profession to which I have dedicated my own life. Sixty-one years after her passing, I am proud to remember Mary Buitureira Sloss and the legacy of service she and her family left behind.

This family plot also includes my great-great-great-grandparents, Daniel and Cesarea Buitureira, and my 2nd great-granduncle, Carlos Buitureira. I also suspect my great-great-grandfather Fulgencio may also be interred within, although there is no existing monument indicating such.

Honored to attend the blessing of the new columbarium at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen, Texas this afternoon with my fellow colleagues and morticians Jesse Zavala, Joe Louis Sanchez, John Kreidler, and Jim Pitts.

Ten years ago, today, I completed this wax facial reconstruction figure during my Restorative Art and Embalming Clinicals at Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas. (I selected a bald model so that I wouldn’t have to recreate the hair! LOL)

It is hard to believe that an entire decade has passed since those days in mortuary college. It was definitely a fun time!

I have held onto this piece all these years as a reminder of where my career began, the skills I worked so hard to develop, and just how far I’ve come in the funeral profession since then. This is a little piece of mortuary school history that will always have a special place in my collection.

A remarkable glimpse into American funeral customs of the early 20th century, this postmortem photograph, captured in Chicago, Illinois, depicts the viewing of Joseph Ralph Markus, who died on the 23rd of June 1930, at 5 years of age.

Young Markus is shown reposing in an elaborately upholstered metal, open casket, surrounded by an extraordinary abundance of floral tributes, standing wreaths, palms, ferns, and other greenery. Members of his family gather solemnly around the casket in what appears to be a funeral parlor or a residence prepared for viewing. The patterned wallpaper, heavy woodwork, fringed draperies, framed landscape, and carefully arranged flowers provide a fascinating look at the period's funeral décor and presentation.

Of particular interest is the Cincinnati Victor Co. Luminaire Funeral Parlor Fan visible at the far right of the photograph. Later associated and renowned for their use in funeral parlors, these distinctive combination fan-and-light fixtures are an unusual piece of early funeral-industry equipment and have become highly collectible today. Seeing one documented in its original funeral setting in 1930 provides wonderful historical context for these fans and how they were actually incorporated into the viewing room.

Signed “Pansirna, Chicago,” by Charles Pansirna, a well-known photographer Chicago's Lithuanian community, this photograph preserves not only an intimate moment of mourning, but an exceptionally detailed record of funeral service, floral design, equipment, and customs as they appeared nearly a century ago.
