It can be tempting to imagine that a practitioner is somehow immune to the ups and downs of life. But, of course, that isn’t the case.

Part of being a practitioner, for me, is learning to show up honestly to the challenges of my own life. Whether I find myself in a cloudy moment or a clear one, I’ve learned that there are certain things that reliably bring me back to a sense of joy, alignment, and purpose:

🍵 A cup of fine tea. Green, white, puer. Brewing a pot of tea, especially in nature will always bring me back to my center.

📚A great story that invites me to reflect on my own life. Lately I’ve been exploring The Lord of the Rings and C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy ( I have found these surprisingly rich and meaningful)

🏔️Philosophy and Spiritual reading. The practice of Lectio Divina (a sort of meditative reading ) reliably expands my perspective and supports my alignment). I’m currently exploring the contemplative roots of Christianity and the bridge between Stoicism and early Christian thought.

🎵 improvisation with music. You may not know that I’m a musician. Music has always given me a way to reconnect with what I’m feeling and return to a sense of beauty, presence, and joy, regardless of what may be happening around me.

And, most importantly, my family.

The daily work of becoming a better man, husband, and father continually brings me back to something larger than myself, a deeper sense of purpose, responsibility, and unconditional love.

These are some of the things that bring me home to myself, so that I can continue to show up for others.

“I haven’t had a headache in over 2 weeks!”

A busy mom who had chronic, almost daily headaches, was so shocked she hadn’t had one in 2 weeks! She came to acupuncture with low expectations— she wasn’t sure what was going to happen, but she didn’t predict she’d be headache free for this long. Being a mom with headaches is NOT easy. I am so glad I could help her.

Helping people with chronic pain is so rewarding, because it allows them more freedom in their lives, more energy to do things they love to do and show up for the people they love, and more clarity on where they are headed.

If you’ve got chronic headaches, neck/back pain, or any symptoms that are holding you back from living life more fully, reach out, I’m here to help you feel better.

Something you may not know about me is that I love to work with kids, especially those who are managing anxiety and ADHD.
Recently, I had a 9 year old patient say something that warmed my heart and made me smile.

While I was taking needles out after a restful acupuncture session, he looked up to me and said:

“You know what Mr. Michael, acupuncture helps feel more calm, less sore, and I fall asleep much easier”.

He expressed this with such gratitude, clarity and deep presence.

In moments like this I feel such a deep sense of purpose.

I LOVE working with women who want to have a baby, but haven’t been able to (otherwise known as “infertility”… but I really hate that word).

And I love treating them when they get pregnant, and after they have the baby too!

Women struggling with infertility have SO much on their plate. The constant testing, hormone treatments, cycle tracking etc etc.

I love treating people struggling to conceive because acupuncture, herbs and nutrition can truly be game changers in helping women get pregnant, stay pregnant and have healthy and happy babies.

It is my joy to walk with someone going through this process, whether it’s naturally, or going through IVF. Acupuncture treatment with me is not just about “optimizing” your fertility. It IS about doing that… and it’s also about supporting you mentally and emotionally through the whole process.

And when women DO get pregnant, supporting a healthy pregnancy and post partum journey is where Chinese medicine shines! And where I love to be of support in a culture that doesn’t fullly support new moms and moms to be.

Motherhood should be available to anyone who wants to become a mother, and Chinese medicine offers a beautiful way to help you achieve that goal, in a supportive and holistic way.

I was recently asked “what is one condition do you love to treat?” This type of question has always been difficult for me to answer. It is like asking me to choose a tree to focus on when my work is based on cultivating the health of the greater eco system of the forest. That said, one condition that I love to treat is chronic anxiety/burnout.

Anxiety takes many forms but at it’s core is an unsettled heart—feeling scattered, fragmented or lacking order. In the same way that a hot air balloon needs weights on it’s basket to prevent it from floating indefinitely into the sky, the mind needs substance and embodied awareness to remain rooted. Acupuncture, Qigong and herbal medicine are very helpful with this.

Why do I love to treat anxiety?

To begin, I take great care in holding sacred space during my sessions. This is especially important for a patient struggling with anxiety. A supportive environment in which one can be deeply heard, while also acknowledging and articulating fear, lays the foundation to root the mind. Holding this space is a great honor and I carry it with a sense of profound responsibility.

Additionally, I like to work with anxiety because Chinese medicine as a model accounts for both the mind and body. Using pulse, tongue and energy field (Wei qi) diagnosis, I can gain insight into the quality of anxiety patterns—whether rooted in nutrition and lack of substance (blood), unprocessed emotions, or disturbances of shen (mind/consciousness). This allows me to provide a treatment appropriate to the type and quality of anxiety that a patient presents with. It so helpful for someone to make a connection between a state of mind and its manifestation in the body. The conversations that transpire because of this are very interesting and deeply nourishing.

Finally, I love to see my patients enter into deep rest and to have the opportunity to unwind deep seated patterns. When a scattered mind becomes rooted and contained, it can remain at center while participating in both the challenges and blessings of life.

These excerpts come from a recent reflection on healing and living in accordance with nature.

As I reflect on these themes, I have found myself asking:

Where in my life am I trying to force an outcome, rather than participating in what is unfolding?

Am I aligned with my own nature?

Am I allowing space to become quiet and receptive to to nature‘s wisdom within me?

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

Healing requires us to slow down and find our center, align, and from that place, participate in the changes and challenges of life.
From this center we can choose to live with presence and with an attitude growth instead of a surface-level battleground of control.

I have always been called into the depths of silence and the practices that encourage receptivity to the unseen forces that shape our lives. It is from this place that I have navigated my own challenges and offer my services of acupuncture, qigong, herbal medicine and self-cultivation.

The human being is more than flesh, blood and bone but also energy, consciousness, and soul. I practice Chinese medicine because it acknowledges the whole person—body, energy, and mind.
I feel at home and truly of service while holding a healing space for my patients. To listen deeply to someone’s story is a an honor, something that I take seriously. Whether a patient comes in needing support with pain, chronic illness, personal crisis, or with the intent to explore inner work, I am always surprised at the connections that are made in the treatment room.
I experience joy when a patient feels “qi” in a state of wonder, or enters into deep contemplative stillness during a treatment. To know that I have helped someone “lighten the load” by easing pain and chronic illness, finding center, or by expanding perspective is why I do what I do. This work matters because healing has a ripple effect outwards into world—to support one person is to support all people.
In my practice I bridge health and inner work, which naturally prompts in-depth conversation. In combination with treatment, my goal is often to direct awareness away from the surface concerns into the core of one’s being. It is in the stillness of this core, underneath the static of daily life, that I believe the deepest healing occurs.
I practice to support those in pain, who are lost, who bear the wounds of living. To inspire hope when nothing else has worked. I hold space for those who seek self-knowledge and methods to uncover it. I practice for the younger generations, who so urgently need presence and connection. To nourish life is why I do what I do.

Why do I do what I do?

I practice acupuncture, herbs, use nutrition, and uplifting conversations because I love seeing people transform. I love seeing people feel better.

It lights me up when the treatments I give can open the door for someone to see another possibility or perspective. To see patients learning about themselves and their symptoms.

And to be witness to what opens up for them when their symptoms get better. How their life flows. How they show up lighter.

It lights me up to be a source of positivity and possibility for people who have otherwise given up, or think there is no way they can heal or get better.

I do what I do because Chinese medicine is rich in medicine and spirit. It truly is a holistic medicine in that it sees how our mental and emotional state can also cause disease. And if we aren’t fulfilling our destiny, the body will send us messages.

I do what I do because growing up, my mother didn’t take very good care of herself. She extended outward, helping everyone else, but not paying much attention to her own wellness. She left this world when I was 13. Since then, I felt a call to do things differently. To learn about what helps us be well. To explore what it would feel like to heal this pattern of giving but not taking care of oneself.

I practice Chinese medicine to inspire my kids. To help them understand how everything is connected in their body and mind. To inspire them to think differently. To learn from the ancient wisdom that has been passed on to us.

This work matters to all those out there that are told their symptoms are only manageable with medication. This work matters to those who have tried everything, but still want to feel better. This work matters to a world full of fixing the branches, but not paying attention to the root. Chinese medicine offers a new perspective on health and healing— one that includes the body, mind and spirit.
