39. my mother really wanted to have a home birth with me. after many, many hours of labor we had to go to the hospital. after I was born, my mom remembers hearing nurses gathered around a piano, singing ‘silent night’- off key, loud, perfect. tears always come when she hears that song this time of year.

a number of years ago by now I had a healing session and learned that the nurses who were playing the piano and singing silent night were actually angels. these angels have always been here for us and our ancestors, and will continue to be there for our generational line. certainly not just ours. since then, the angels have periodically shown me some of the darkest experiences of mine and those of my ancestors, but revealed to me where they were during those times.

the angels were the woman who sat next to my deeply distressed father on the plane back home from Canada, holding his hand and witnessing his unimaginable pain. That angel told him that although life would be forever changed and filled with grief when we returned, there was also unimaginable beauty to come.

they were the angsty, cringey poems written by Seneca Manx to Juniper Wolf and other incredible, creative, pained, beautiful, resilient childhood friends (letting the part of me who feels crappy about not remembering all of our pen names feel okay posting this).

Jack was an angel, returning to a transverse position in my body up until labor at the very final stage. not being conscious while he arrived on this earth remains incredibly special painful for me, and, somehow he had deep, critical knowing about his positioning as he entered this world. despite no logical evidence or medical confirmation, I have an inkling that he may have kept us both alive by returning to his weird ass, rare birthing position.

the angels showed me how, while being sexually assaulted in college, one of the young men had more access to angel within him. he had less sadistic and more ambivalent parts of him, and eventually found his knowing enough to allow me freedom. the angels showed me that they were there within him, even.

thank you angels. thank you linear time for giving me 39.

38 years old today.

today in my own therapy, I found a cluster of little ones ranging in age from 9 to maybe five months. they nestled into a deep dark hole, located in my left hip. I peered over the edge and the 9 year old protectively looked up at me, concerned; she told me she’s the caregiver for the other little ones, and needed to keep them safe. when i told her who i was she had a part of her who was surprised.. ‘grey hair?! you look like grandma!’ she said. unlike some others within me, it didn’t take her long to feel relief that i was there. she was tired of keeping the littler ones safe… she wants to be 9.

she told me that while it was isolating, cold and dark in this hole where they lived, there was beauty here too. she shared that these little children had found a safe place to be loved, and celebrated, for exactly who they were. they didn’t need to mask, people please, decide which version they needed to be. the little ones clambered to show me their beautiful songs, dances, drawings, writings. a little talent show, deep within a hole in my hip.

I asked them how they felt about being in the hole, wondered if they knew they had choice. That they could, if they wanted, come out of the hole and be exactly who they were in the rest of the body. Maybe even show the world too.

They were ready. At first the 9 year old thought she would have to carry them out of the hole, my first act of repair to her was lifting them out myself. And then her, once she knew the others were safe.

The littler ones easily began to swim, flip, ride through my bloodstream. Exploring every inch of the body, playing and creating and laughing. The 9 year old was still a bit sticky, she told me she has more she needs from me. I told her I am here, and will come back to be with her. She will never be alone again.

dear heavy stomping feet, rigid torso, and icy stare,

i really see you, oh dear protective one.

something hard or scary happens in the world, usually in our relationships, to activate pain and then you come on strong. i even see how you are trying so, so hard to not let the rageful protective one escape outside of our body, unfurled onto the world, especially onto and within our loved ones.

when you come on strong, though, you can take up so much space in the room. you’re trying so hard to avoid explosion by keeping the pain within, but then like helium the angst stretches a balloon tighter and tighter. you are trying to avoid pain within and within those you love- i have reverence for your intention.

and, it’s not working my sweet. they see, they feel when you are in pain. but not only that, they worry and in your icy silence they have to guess why we are upset. they can feel the energy shift, and they watch. not vigilant yet, but it’s coming. our older boy is so emotionally attuned- a great gift and curse...

(.. shhh, Shame. i see you dear one. by releasing and sharing how we have affected others we give space for change, for revolution. it’s okay, I’ve got this.)

i know it didn’t start with you, you come from generations before us. and remember, the rageful one isn’t with us in the way he has been- we gave him back through generations to heal. i want you to remember that i can keep us safe now. you can rest, or actually, you have told me that you love learning so, so much. you spent so much time blocked up that you want to melt and spread and learn and experience. please remember, your energy gets to be spent doing that now.

love,

me

dear stretch marks, side b**b, and scar where my bellybutton used to live,

thank you.

my gratitude to you for bearing witness to all the life we’ve lived. you are fascinating, wise, gritty, and full of story. you are entirely perfect.

dear 13 year old one, I’m sorry you didn’t get to wear the billabong bikini that made you look ‘like a 20 year old’. this scared your parents, the ‘raising a daughter in toxic masculinity’ fears that none of us (or at least, I) have great answers for yet. they loved you, and were doing their best. patriarchy makes it impossible to get this right, it feels.

and, i do know that i wish you had gotten to wear that bikini. i really wish you didn’t receive the message that your body was wrong. you did look older with your wide hips and tall frame and breasts, but this never should have been your problem. you were entirely perfect. you are entirely perfect.

summer is here, and we still love the water. I wear this bikini for you. and yes, it’s from a company every bit as cool as billabong.

dear little one who watches her VHS tapes over and over (and over) again,

today in yoga, the music was set to instrumental Disney songs.. ‘no matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep on believing…’ I rolled my eyes a bit, but then I kept breathing. I’m so glad I did.

because then, your voice filled in the words over the instrumentals, rose up into my throat from deep in my belly. thank you, little one, for coming to be with me. you showed me yourself in our old townhouse, lying on your belly on the floor in front of the tv. dirty summer feet faced up to the sky, coveted peace frogs shirt slightly damp from a yard sprinkler.

‘what was it like for you’ i asked ‘to watch those movies over and over again?’ lady in the tramp, old yeller, mermaids- different movies, same pattern.

‘it felt comforting to know what was coming, to know what would happen next. it felt soothing to be able to predict, not have to guess. even when the story was sad, I knew what to expect. and there was always at least a little bit of happy.’

she, this little one, wanted me to know that in present day when I feel the need to watch a show over and over, it’s still her. she’s still in there, needing to feel safe.

i thanked her for trusting me, for coming to me today. i told her she was always welcome to watch the same thing over and over, i’ll always put it on. and, if she ever wants to watch something new instead, we can. she leaned in a little closer.

dear flashes of light in the corner of my right eye,

thank you, wise one, for manifesting as a new version of my ocular migraines. you must have known that if you showed up as your typical presentation of kaleidoscopes in my vision, i may have overrode your warning: ‘it’s just stress, just trauma response’.. just, only, diminish down play, ignore.

you knew I really needed to pause. so thank you, mischievous one, for finding a way to get my attention. i got my ass to the ophthalmologist, where i learned that my eyes are ‘perfectly healthy, no retinal tear and no sign of underlying health conditions’.. but i see you, dear one, you are screaming that everything is not perfect. there is pain here.

I am listening, and i will take care of the parts who need to feel safe.

i’m so sorry you had to work so hard to get my attention. thank you for sticking with me as i evolve.

with all my love,

me

‘everything, dear one,
already lives deep within’,
whispered a voice at the base of my spine. ‘the possibilities are endless’

today i’ve been tuning into how the different voices within me sound. how does the one who often offers logic or reason speak to me? who else can share when Logic feels like she can rest for a bit? turns out that today, it was a little playful one who held some simple wisdom. we already have everything we need.
