What keeps you grounded?

10/11/2026

A lot of yoga teachers don't teach this shape anymore....

And I get it. There is a lot going on and it takes a lot of strength and flexibility to get into it. And that doesn't even cover what may or may not work for a student's head and neck. If you are teaching a large group class and don't know all of the students, it absolutely makes sense to offer a different inversion.

However.....

If you know your students and their body history or if you are working with them one on one, you can absolutely approach this shape.

Build the pose slowly. Work on the smaller components that are needed. Stay safe, but be curious 🥰

🌱Root to rise. Sounds simple. But it takes effort and concentration.

Going upside down is one of my favorite things. It's a new perspective and it shifts the effects of gravity on the body. My legs feel light and free while my upperbody does the majority of the work to root down and provide support.

🤸🏼‍♀️We're working on inversions all month -- and we'd love to have you join us!

Hope to see you soon 🤩

Pretty sure I passed a kidney stone -- WHILE TEACHING a restorative yoga class. I also may have passed one during the practice in this video.

And here's the thing that I learned -- women (generally speaking) are conditioned to just carry on about normal life as if they are not in pain. But pain is literally a signal from your brain meant to warn you and protect you from injury and danger.....

So maybe instead of pushing through that alarm system, maybe we should slow down, rest, and take care of our bodies.

You've only got ONE body during this lifetime. Care for it well.

My hips have an extreme range of motion in certain directions. And in others, they just say NOPE.

What about you? Do your hips feel tight? Do they pop and crack? Can you move certain directions easily while others seem impossible??

Guess what - some of that is beyond your control. Your specific anatomy plays a HUGE part in what shapes your body can easily get into (or not).

So, the next time you are looking across the room at the teacher or another student, just know that it's not always blood, sweat, and tears that is necessary to get into the pose. Some shapes just may never happen for you, and that's OKAY! Maybe it's time to stop forcing your body into pretzel shapes. Maybe it's time to honor and appreciate what you are working with right now.

Confessions of a yoga teacher: Sometimes stillness is NOT the best way into the practice for me.

Also, I was taking a recorded class, so I wasn't being rude to a teacher offering live instruction. I was in fact prepping my body for the movement to come. I did some nerve glides, went off camera to rub a lacrosse ball on my hips using a wall, and came back for a forward fold and some cat cows.

Should you do this in a group class -- probably not.
Should you take care of your body throughout the practice -- of course!

What about you? Is the centering at the beginning of class challenging? Or do you enjoy those few moments to collect yourself before the movement practice begins?

Reviewing the tapes can teach you a lot.

They do it for sports all the time.

And I take video of myself on occasion to watch my technique when lifting weights or working on a challenging inversion or backbend.

Recording myself teaching is no different - and there are always new things to learn. I had no idea how still I get in my physical body when I'm instructing movement.

And perhaps that's the energy I'm givng when I teach a class. Stability. Unwavering support so that you can wobble as you find your way.
