Before the development of modern vaccines, meningitis was one of the most feared childhood illnesses.

Bacterial meningitis, a serious infection of the protective lining around the brain and spinal cord, could cause severe complications including hearing loss, brain injury, developmental delays, limb loss, and even death. Families often had little warning, as children could become critically ill within hours.

Fortunately, vaccines have dramatically changed the story. Immunizations against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pneumococcal disease, and meningococcal disease have led to a significant decrease in cases of bacterial meningitis in the United States.

Many parents have never seen a child with bacterial meningitis... because vaccines have been so successful! That's one of public health's greatest success stories and a reminder of why staying up to date on vaccines matters.

If you're unsure whether your child is up to date on vaccines, give our office a call. We can review their immunization record and help ensure they have the protection they need!

Graduating college is a major milestone... it's also a great time to take ownership of your healthcare!

As you transition into the next chapter, there are a few important health-related tasks that can help set you up for success.

Consider creating a healthcare checklist that includes:
✔️ Establishing care with an adult primary care provider
✔️ Understanding your health insurance coverage and any upcoming changes
✔️ Refilling medications before starting a new job or moving to a new city
✔️ Keeping a copy of your vaccine record and medical history
✔️ Learning how to schedule appointments, request refills, and access your patient portal
✔️ Knowing where to seek care for routine, urgent, and emergency health needs

Taking charge of your healthcare is an important part of becoming an independent adult. The habits you build now can have a positive impact on your health for years to come!

Recent graduates, what's one adulting skill you wish someone had taught you sooner? Share your advice in the comments to help the next group of graduates prepare for life after college.

Every child develops at their own pace, but milestones help us track how children are growing and learning over time!

While a delay doesn't always mean there is a problem, recognizing concerns early can help children access support and services when they need them most.

Some signs that may warrant a conversation with your pediatrician include:
- Not smiling by 2 months
- Not sitting independently by 9 months
- Not babbling by 9 months
- Not using single words by 15 months
- Not walking by 18 months
- Loss of previously acquired skills at any age
- Limited eye contact or social interaction
- Difficulty understanding simple directions

Remember, milestones are guidelines, not deadlines! Some children simply develop at a different pace. However, when concerns arise, early intervention can make a significant difference in a child's long-term development.

One of the reasons well visits are so important is that developmental screening is built into routine pediatric care. These screenings help identify concerns early and ensure children receive the support they need as soon as possible!

If you've ever thought, "Something just seems different," trust your instincts and give us a call! We can evaluate your child's development and, if needed, connect your family with early intervention services and specialists.

When your child is sick or injured, it can be hard to know where to go for care.
The good news?

Many childhood illnesses can be safely managed by your pediatrician, while some symptoms require immediate emergency care!

When you're not sure, start by calling your pediatrician. We know your child's medical history and can often help determine the most appropriate place for care, potentially saving you time, money, and unnecessary stress.

Remember, for emergencies such as choking, changes in level of consciousness, or other life-threatening problems, call 911 or seek immediate ER care.

Believe it or not, a successful school year starts before the first day of class!

The weeks leading up to school are a great time to help children ease back into routines. Start adjusting bedtimes and wake times 1–2 weeks before school begins, practice morning routines, and make sure backpacks, school supplies, and paperwork are ready to go. For younger children, talking about what to expect can help ease first-day jitters, while older children may benefit from discussing goals and expectations for the new school year.

Remember that transitions can be challenging, and it's normal for children to experience a mix of excitement and anxiety as school approaches.

Busy schedules can make it difficult to fit appointments into the school and work week!

To help support our families, Saturday appointments may be available for sick visits, urgent concerns, and well visits for families who are unable to come during regular weekday hours.

Weekend availability can fill quickly, especially during cold, flu, and back-to-school seasons, so scheduling early is encouraged whenever possible.

If your child needs to be seen and weekday appointments are difficult, contact South Sound Pediatrics to ask about Saturday availability and scheduling options.

Poison ivy is a common cause of itchy rashes during outdoor activities, especially in wooded areas, camps, trails, and sports fields. The rash happens when skin comes into contact with urushiol, an oily substance found on poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac plants.

Symptoms may include redness, intense itching, swelling, and blistering that can appear hours to days after exposure. The rash itself is not contagious, but the plant oil can spread from clothing, shoes, pets, backpacks, or sports equipment if not washed off.

Treatment often includes washing the skin quickly after exposure, cool compresses, anti-itch creams, oatmeal baths, and sometimes prescription medications for more severe reactions.

Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and learning to identify poison ivy plants can help reduce exposure during outdoor activities.

Exposed to poison ivy? Call to schedule an appointment to see if prescription medication is needed.

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of crashes among teen drivers! Even looking at a phone for a few seconds can take a driver’s eyes off the road long enough to miss traffic changes, pedestrians, or sudden stops.

According to the CDC, thousands of people are injured or killed each year in crashes involving distracted driving, and teen drivers are at especially high risk because they are still gaining experience behind the wheel.

Distractions can include texting, changing music, eating, using GPS, taking photos, or interacting with passengers. Safe driving starts with creating habits early, including putting phones away before the car starts moving!

Parents also play an important role by modeling safe driving behaviors and having clear conversations about phone use, passengers, and expectations before teens begin driving independently.

Head lice are common among school-age children, but there are still many misconceptions about them!

Myth: Lice mean a child has poor hygiene.
Fact: Lice can affect anyone and are not related to cleanliness. They spread through close head-to-head contact.

Myth: Everything in the house must be thrown away or deeply sanitized.
Fact: Basic cleaning of bedding, hats, brushes, and recently used items is usually enough. Lice do not survive long away from the scalp.

Myth: Children with lice should be excluded from school for long periods.
Fact: Many schools no longer follow strict “no-nit” policies because lice are common and not considered a health hazard!

Treatment options may include over-the-counter lice shampoos, prescription treatments, and careful nit removal. Following directions closely and checking household contacts is important.

Want to make sure you are treating your child’s lice correctly? Call to chat with one of our phone nurses!
