You may have noticed I have been quieter than usual here lately.

There is a reason for that. I have been in caterpillar mode. In the chrysalis. Heads down, wings forming, preparing for four days that I believe will change how you think about creativity and the human mind.

This week, the Creativity and Madness® 2026 Live Zoom Conference begins. Four days. Sixteen sessions. Four in-depth afternoon workshops. World-class presenters exploring the intersection of creativity, psychology, and the human experience. Up to 28 CE/CME credits approved for ACCME, APA, ANCC, ASWB, and NBCC. Physicians can claim AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.

* Sessions meet ethics, social justice, and cultural diversity requirements.

Our On-Demand Enduring Content Program is available year-round and growing. This week's sessions will be added following the conference.

Transformation takes many forms. This week, it takes the form of four extraordinary days together.

Use code DRAMYVAIL15 for 15% off registration. Good through today only.

Best Mental Health Provider in North Tahoe and Truckee ~ 2026. Fourth consecutive year.

This recognition is humbling in the best possible way. It reminds me of my calling.

There is something sacred about being trusted with another person's inner life. The courage it takes to be truly seen is extraordinary. That trust is something I hold with great care, always.

To everyone who has extended that trust to me, near and far: thank you. This means more than a title. It means I am doing something right. 🙏🏻

Happy Independence Day. 🇺🇸

Freedom starts with an idea. Then someone has to be brave enough to act on it. It becomes real through sacrifice and the sustained courage of generations willing to work for something larger than themselves, creating possibilities that did not exist before them. It remains fragile. It requires protecting. It requires each of us.

Freedom is not free. Today we honor the vision, the sacrifice, and the people who made it real. Their courage is the reason we gather, celebrate, and live as freely as we do.

National freedom deserves deep honoring. So does the freedom we pursue within ourselves. Both matter. Both require tending.

Emotional independence is a form of freedom too: the ability to pause before reacting, to hold boundaries with kindness, to choose what deserves energy and what no longer does. These are not small things. They shape the quality of every relationship, every decision, and every day.

Real freedom begins inside. Notice where outside voices have taken up residence: consumerism, expectation, the slow pressure of being shaped by forces that do not have your best interests at heart. You were born free. You have the right to return there.

What would your life look like if you released what was never authentically yours?
Freedom deserves respect, not assumption. History has shown it can be won and lost within a single generation. Protect it fiercely in the world. Cultivate it faithfully within yourself. Tend it daily. Choose it consciously. Pass it forward with intention.

Wishing you peace, connection, and the courage to claim the freedom that has always been yours. 🩵

For more than four decades, Creativity and Madness® has explored one enduring question:

How does creativity shape the way we grow, connect, and make meaning of our lives?

That question feels especially alive in a culture that often rewards productivity over reflection, and output over imagination.

As Executive Director of AIMED and the steward of this conference, I have the privilege of bringing this vision to life each year. From July 30 through August 2, I am honored to be joined by an extraordinary faculty of clinicians, scholars, and artists for the 2026 Creativity and Madness® Live Zoom Conference. Together we will explore creativity, psychology, medicine, culture, and the human experience through presentations, conversations, and shared curiosity.

As a psychologist in private practice, this is the kind of learning that touches everything: how I think, how I see, and how I live.

✔ ACCME | APA | ASWB | NBCC
✔ AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ | Physicians may claim credit for participation

If this resonates with you, or if you know someone who would benefit, I hope you will join us. Use code DRAMYVAIL2026 at registration for 10% off.

I would be honored to learn alongside you. 🙏🏻

Many people carry parts of themselves that rarely make it into the room.

The thoughtful answer stays unspoken. The creative idea waits for permission. The truest feeling gets edited before it gets shared.

Congruence is the experience of living in alignment with who we are, rather than who we believe we should be. When those two versions move closer together, something shifts: relief, energy, a sense of coming home to oneself.

The wild heart does not want to be managed. It wants to be honored.

This week, set aside fifteen minutes for one act of authenticity. Say the true thing. Begin the project. Share the idea. Choose one.

The people around you benefit when more of you shows up. So do you. 🙏🏻❤️

Full Send Friday. Today's full send is for love. 🙏🏻

I saw a post recently that said "Tell your friends you love them. Tell them daily. Make it weird."

Yes. Exactly that.

Platonic love is undervalued in our culture. So much attention goes to romantic connection. Some of the most meaningful friendships fade simply from lack of tending, because people focus most energy on their “significant other.”

Make a point to share your thoughts with the people who have held you, championed you, and shown up in the ordinary moments.

Love shared out loud grows stronger. That is not sentiment, that is how connection works.

This weekend, make a point to tell someone you love them. A friend. A mentor. A neighbor. Anyone whose presence has had a positive impact on your life.
Say it out loud. Make it a little weird. Enjoy their reaction! ❤️

Tune In Tuesday 🙏🏻

Sit with this one before you answer.

Who was your lighthouse figure as a child?

A lighthouse figure is someone who held a safe and welcoming space for you to simply be yourself. Not to fix or redirect to witness. Steady, present, and consistent in a way that changed the course of who you became.

This person may have been a parent, grandparent, teacher, coach, or neighbor. They may never have known the magnitude of what they were offering. Lighthouse figures rarely do.

The memory of being truly seen by even one person is powerful enough to anchor a life.

Who was yours? And how did their light shape you?

Allow your children to experience all of their feelings. Help them name their emotions.

The children who struggle most with emotions are rarely the ones who feel too much. They are the ones who learned early that certain feelings were unwelcome.

When children are encouraged to name what moves through them, they learn something that lasts: their inner world matters. Feelings are meant to move, not be stored in the body until they find another way out.

Be the person they do not have to perform okayness for.

Children who grow up knowing their feelings are allowed become adults who know how to be present. That is the gift.

What emotions did you grow up believing were not allowed?

Full Send Friday. Get outside. 🙏🏻

Wherever you are, whatever the weather: find your way outside today, even for 15 minutes.

Nature is medicine. Research consistently shows that time in natural environments lowers cortisol, reduces anxiety, and improves mood and cognitive function.

I grew up with the mountains and the water, and I know in my body what they do for me. They quiet the noise. They return me to myself.

This weekend, spend time outside, where the sky is your ceiling. Notice what shifts.
I am heading outside today with Baffin and Churro.

Where do you go when you need to return to yourself? 🙏🏻

Some of my clearest moments of self-awareness happen at 3am, outside enjoying the night sky.

The silence holds me, and the scale of the universe does the rest.
In that vastness, what is most important rises to the surface and becomes unmistakable.

Nature has a way of returning me to myself.
What returns you to yourself? 🙏🏻
