Hearing “no” is part of life, but learning how to respond to disappointment takes practice.

In ABA, we may intentionally practice this skill during small, low-stakes moments. The purpose is not to deny a child simply to see how they respond or to expect immediate compliance. It is to provide safe, supported experiences in which the child learns that they can feel disappointed, the adult will remain calm, and their relationship is still secure.

These small moments can help build the flexibility children need when something is unavailable, another child is using a preferred toy, or a request cannot be honored for safety reasons.

The goal is not to prevent every uncomfortable feeling. It is to help children experience those feelings with support and learn that they can still be okay. At Radical Minds, these opportunities are individualized and approached thoughtfully, with each child’s needs and dignity at the center. 💚

“Use your words” is often said with good intentions. We want to understand what a child needs and help them communicate it.

But that reminder does not provide the words they may be missing—or the support they may need to access familiar language in a difficult moment.

At Radical Minds, we focus on teaching what a child can say or do instead. That might mean modeling “help, please,” supporting communication through an AAC device, or recognizing a gesture that tells us they need a break.

Our goal is meaningful communication, not spoken words at all costs. Every child deserves a way to express their wants, needs, and feelings—and to be understood. 💚

🎉 Celebrating Hillary — 5 years at Radical Minds! 🎉

Hillary joined Radical Minds as an RBT with the clear goal of becoming a BCBA. She began preparing for that role early, continued her education, and now serves as a Clinical Supervisor at our Q Street location in Millard.

Hillary brings a thoughtful approach to her work and is incredibly diligent in everything she does. Her attention to detail, clinical knowledge, and commitment to providing high-quality services make her an important part of the Q Street team.
