What can a can of sardines do for your health? Quite a lot. 🐟

Creighton University physician and nutrition expert Sonal Haerter, MBBS, assistant professor of internal medicine, recently shared her expertise with National Geographic on the nutritional benefits of tinned fish.

From omega-3 fatty acids that support heart health to vitamin D, B12, calcium and taurine, fish like sardines, salmon and mackerel can be a nutrient-dense, affordable and convenient addition to your diet.

Haerter also explains what to look for when choosing tinned fish, how often to eat it and why a food-first approach can be better than relying on supplements.

Sardines, salmon, mackerel, and other canned fish pack in a ton of essential nutrients—and there are simple ways to add them to your diet.

After her fourth year of collegiate volleyball, Elle G***k made the decision to give up her final year of eligibility and enroll in the physician assistant program at Creighton.

Healthcare had always been the goal. Inspired by her parents, who both work in the field, and by her own experiences as a patient, Elle spent time shadowing PAs and learning more about the profession. She was drawn to the flexibility of the role, the opportunity to work across specialties and the collaborative nature of patient care.

"I had accomplished everything I had dreamed of and more during my volleyball career," Elle said. "During my patient care hours, it confirmed that I wanted (and was ready) to pursue my lifelong career goal of becoming a PA."

She chose Creighton because of its academic reputation, high PANCE pass rate, early clinical experiences, opportunities for interprofessional education and the support she experienced from faculty and students throughout the admissions process.

Jada Onwuta didn't discover the physician assistant profession until a few weeks before graduating college.

Curious to learn more, she researched the profession, reached out to dozens of physician assistants across Arizona and spent time shadowing providers in family medicine, hospice care and dermatology.

"Being a PA not only fit my personality, but my life goals and career aspirations."

During her gap years, Jada earned a Master of Biology degree, taught anatomy and physiology labs at Arizona State University, tutored students and worked as a patient care technician while preparing for PA school.

She chose Creighton because of its mission, its commitment to holistic healthcare and its dedication to preparing healthcare professionals to serve the people of Arizona.

At 5 years old, Keith Abbey put on his first pair of hearing aids and discovered sounds he had never heard before.

That experience sparked a lifelong curiosity about hearing and inspired a path that has now brought him to the Creighton University School of Medicine as an MD/PhD student.

After earning a degree in biomedical engineering, Keith spent three years at the National Institutes of Health researching genetic therapies that could provide additional options for families navigating hereditary hearing loss while gaining clinical experience through volunteering and shadowing.

"My disability taught me from an early age that the human experience is incredibly diverse," Keith said. "Individualized care, therefore, can only be truly effective with dignity in the physician-patient relationship."

Keith chose Creighton because of its commitment to cura personalis, or care for the whole person, and the opportunity to continue his research through the Dr. Richard J. Bellucci Hearing Center while preparing for a career as a physician-scientist.

Welcome to the Class of 2030, Keith. Read more about Keith and the Class of 2030: https://www.creighton.edu/news/different-paths-one-purpose-meet-two-members-creightons-md-class-2030

Access to high-quality surgical care is essential for every community.

Creighton University School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, in partnership with CHI Health/CommonSpirit, has established a new rural surgery residency rotation in Missouri Valley, IA. The program gives surgical residents valuable experience caring for patients in a rural setting while helping address the growing need for physicians in underserved communities.

This initiative reflects the strength of the Creighton-CHI Health academic partnership and our shared commitment to preparing physicians who will improve access to care across Nebraska and beyond.
