Marybeth Helmink really wanted to make it to her son's wedding on May 30th. She and her family knew the cancer she was battling might make that tough.

So her nurses at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center helped bring the wedding to Marybeth.

When Helmink's nurse, Maya Phillips, heard about the family wanting to get married at the hospital, she started getting things in motion to create an unforgettable moment.

With just a few hours notice, staff and family members gathered in the Chihuly Sanctuary for the official ceremony.

“What makes this job so fun is being able to connect with patients and helping them accomplish whatever goals they have,” Phillips said. “Knowing how much Marybeth wanted to be a part of this, it just felt very special to be able to make it happen for her here.”

The day of the impromptu ceremony, Kristen White, nurse manager, Medical and Surgical Oncology, bought a cake and flowers.

White said being a part of the wedding would be one of the most memorable moments in her career.

Some family members drove hours to get there. But they saw Noah Helmink marry the love of his life, Lauren Wilkerson. The couple had gotten engaged in the fall of 2024. Earlier that year, Helmink was diagnosed with cancer

Marybeth and her husband Kirk also got to see it.

Sadly, Marybeth passed away three days later.

We were honored to be there to help the Helminks and Wilkersons capture these images of the emotional day.

Celebrating 40 years of saving lives! Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy team marked its 40th anniversary with an event that featured several patients whose lives have been impacted by the treatment.

That includes Jonathan Hernandez, who credits the more than 100 treatments he received in the unit nearly 20 years ago with altering the path of his life.

"I suffered a brain injury from carbon monoxide poisoning," says Hernandez, now a patient financial counselor at Nebraska Medicine. "I was brought here to this hospital and was in a coma for about three days."

The first few HBO treatments in 2008 helped a lot. The therapy provides 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, allowing your lungs and blood to absorb much more oxygen than normal, helping deliver it to tissues and promote healing.

But after that, his deficits got much worse. He was no longer self-sufficient. His doctor at the time decided to try the the therapy outside the usual window. "I did 20 treatments at first, then took a break and went through some neurological testing," recalls Hernandez. "They were like alright, he's definitely getting better. Let's keep doing it."

Hernandez eventually had more than 100 treatments over the course of several years. "I'm happy to say I'm now married," says Hernandez, with a smile. "I have two kids, I work here at this hospital full time. I love being able to work at the hospital that saved my life."

Co-medical directors of the unit, Jenny Thacker, MD, and Jeffrey Cooper, MD, were also in attendance and spoke to the media about the significance of having the only 24/7 facility in the state and the only one in the region between Kansas City, Denver and Minneapolis that provides around-the-clock emergency, critical care-capable hyperbaric therapy.

After spending three weeks at the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, five former passengers from the MV Hondius have returned to their home states for continued monitoring for the next 21 days under the jurisdiction of their local and state public health departments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requested the individuals from the cruise ship associated with a Hantavirus remain at the NQU through Sunday, May 31.

Travel for the former passengers was coordinated through the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and each passenger’s local and state health department. The individuals did not travel commercially, and appropriate biocontainment measures were in place during their transport. The CDC has also been coordinating with impacted states on requirements for the passengers to continue self-monitoring at their homes.

Because symptoms of Hantavirus can take up to 42 days to appear, all 18 of the former passengers were strongly encouraged to complete the entire period at the NQU. Thirteen of the passengers remain in Omaha for monitoring.
