Myth vs. Fact: PT Edition #3

1)❌ Myth: Tight muscles just need more stretching.
✅ Fact: “Tightness” is often related to weakness, stability demands, or nervous system protection, not just muscle length.
2)❌ Myth: Arthritis means you should stop exercising.
✅ Fact: Exercise is one of the most effective treatments for arthritis when properly dosed.
3)❌ Myth: Doing abs will cure back pain.
✅ Fact: Back pain is usually about load tolerance and movement control, not just abdominal strength.

Myth vs. Fact: PT Edition #2
1)❌ Myth: Pain during exercise means you’re making things worse.
✅ Fact: Not all pain is harmful. Some discomfort can be part of the healing process when guided appropriately.
2)❌ Myth: If imaging (MRI/X-ray) shows damage, you’ll always have pain.
✅ Fact: Imaging findings don’t always match symptoms. Many people with “abnormal” scans have no pain at all.
3)❌ Myth: You should stop activity completely if something hurts.
✅ Fact: Modifying activity—not eliminating it—is usually the key to recovery.

Something that many people do not know is that Physical Therapy can be used as a primary means to manage chronic pain. You do not have to suffer from weakness, lack of motion/mobility, or be post-surgical to attend PT for pain management. Prescription medications can certainly help reduce your pain, but exercise can as well without the troubling side effects and many other benefits. Check out below for the benefits of increasing your activity level.
