Todd Smith Fitness Todd Smith Fitness My Name is Todd Smith and I am a health and fitness writer and speaker, a personal trainer and a world-class natural body builder.

For nearly 30 years, I have been passionately pursuing the best, safest and most efficient ways to transform the human body–my own body and my clients’ bodies. Everything I do is about delivering results to my customers. Before I continue on about myself and what I have been doing for the last 30 years, I have to ask you some questions: What are your goals? How do you want to look? How do you want

to feel? As I said earlier, my entire way of doing business revolves around helping YOU achieve YOUR GOALS and delivering you EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT!

The people in the best shape for life usually don't have the highest ceilings — they have the highest floors.
So instead of asking "what's the most I can do?", ask "what's the least I can do?" Be consistent over intense — repeatable things are what stick. Three tips: build repeatable habits (20-year routines, not 2-week routines), train hard but stay safe, and stay in the game at all costs.
Who cares what you can deadlift if it puts you out for 5–6 weeks? Especially over 40. The goal is to be in it for another 40 years, not for weeks. Come train for the long game with us: https://www.toddsmithfitness.com/

Movement is a privilege.

One day something shifts. You stop dreading your workout — and start being grateful you get to have one.
A body that can move is a gift. Most of us don’t think about it until it changes. You don’t have to wait for that moment. Show up now, while you can. Because you want to, not because you have to.
Gratitude and movement belong together. When you realize what your body is actually capable of, showing up stops feeling like a chore. It starts feeling like the least you can do for something that does so much for you.
And gratitude isn’t just a feeling. It calms your stress, helps you rest, and tells your whole body: you’re safe. A grateful heart, a healthier life.

That’s the spirit we train in. Come find your best hour with us — link in bio.

"Why does my lower back hurt every time I deadlift?" Fair question. A deadlift asks a lot — you have to keep the lower back arched and brace hard the whole way. And unless you're a powerlifter, there's a bigger question: why are you deadlifting at all?
There are no must-do exercises. If you want to build muscle and the deadlift doesn't agree with you, here are four that hit the same muscles: a timed hold (30s hold / 30s reps, 3–4 rounds), a weighted hyperextension, a reverse hyperextension (your legs become the weight), and a seated leg curl to isolate the hamstrings. Same muscles — a lot easier on your back.

75 Hard. A $2,000 mirror for your wall. An app. The next 30-day challenge. What do they all have in common? They're selling you a gimmick with no methodology.
What actually works is simple: build muscle, eat clean, train consistently, and be honest with yourself. A challenge ends in 75 days — we give you the tools and the mentality to execute for the rest of your life. Todd's had the same message for 41 years: no challenges, no gimmicks, no marketing tricks. We're not a marketing company. We just coach people, consistently.

Statistically, women live longer than men — so why aren't we living better?

Living longer isn't the same as living well, and it's not your cardio, your weight, or your step count that decides the difference. It's your muscle. After 40, women lose muscle faster, and strength, energy, and the ability to do what you love go with it.

The good news: muscle is the one thing you can grow back. Heavy, intentional strength training — about 3 hours a week — is how. This isn't about chasing youth; it's about building muscle that carries you through the decades.

We’ve never just been a gym.

The idea that runs everything here is a simple one: take care of your people. And over 41 years in Omaha, “your people” has grown to mean a lot more than the folks in the room.
When the world shut down in March 2020, Todd and the team made 500+ grocery deliveries — eggs, milk, bread, canned food, meat — to elderly and immune-compromised neighbors who couldn’t get out. Todd covered every bag. As he put it back then: “If it wasn’t for Omaha, I wouldn’t have anything.”
We’ve stood with Omaha’s veterans. We’ve put 10,000+ Be Amazing books into kids’ hands, free. Little things, over a lot of years — because showing up for each other is the whole point.

Omaha has taken care of us for four decades. We’ll always look for ways to give it back.

Let's talk about cardio, but not the way you're thinking. Most people do it to burn calories. We do it to build a heart that lasts.
This is zone 2: a conversation pace you can walk, bike, or do on the treadmill here at Todd Smith Fitness. Nothing you're beating yourself up over — you're building the engine and keeping stress in check. Paired with the stair-stepper intervals, it's just another tool in the toolbox. Best part? It fits in 3 hours or less a week.
Cardio for the heart, not the calories. Want a coach to guide you on which tool to use and when? Come see us: https://www.toddsmithfitness.com/

Every week the fitness industry has something new to sell you — a challenge, a secret, a supplement, a promise that this time it'll be different. That's marketing.
Here's what actually works, and always has: consistent strength training, walking, enough protein, managing stress, and rest. The industry runs on sales and marketing. We run on coaching — building fundamental habits, showing up for the repeatable work, and being held accountable. That's what we've done for 41 years in Omaha.
No shortcuts to sell. Come see the difference: https://www.toddsmithfitness.com/

If your lower back and hips feel tight all the time, stretching probably isn’t the answer.

Here’s what’s usually going on: sitting all day keeps your hips and lower back short and tight, and your glutes switch off. So you stretch — you get ten minutes of relief, and then the tightness is right back.

The real fix is to open the front and strengthen the back:
Walk the incline — and don’t hold on. It opens tight hips and wakes your glutes.
Hyperextension — pinch your shoulders back, draw the belly button in, and strengthen your glutes and low back.
Leg press — load your legs with full stability, so you build strength without straining your spine.

Don’t stretch it. Strengthen it. (And if the pain is sharp or won’t go away, get it checked first.)
