The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) positions undergraduates for a successful start to careers in science and research.

Each summer, undergraduate students gain 10 weeks of hands-on research experience alongside faculty mentors and research staff at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and University of Nebraska Medical Center.

This summer, SURP students explored questions ranging from new treatment targets for medulloblastoma to DNA copying errors that can drive cancer. Through their work, students are contributing to a deeper understanding and exploring scientific questions that could shape future approaches to treatment.

Over the past years SURP students have gained firsthand experience in cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, helping build the next generation of scientists while contributing to the future of cancer research.

Congratulations to Dr. Sandipan Brahma, PhD, on his recent National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) R35 MIRA award!

The five-year award, titled "Chromatin Remodeling Mechanisms Across Scales," will allow Dr. Brahma's team to build a sustainable research program focused on how chromatin, epigenetic, and transcriptional regulation work, while also exploring new and high-risk research directions.

Dr. Brahma's lab studies fundamental mechanisms governing gene regulation and how DNA is packaged within our cells.

"These processes are highly coordinated, much like an orchestra, and when this coordination is disrupted, it can lead to developmental disorders and cancer," said Dr. Brahma.

The team focuses on molecular machines called ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers, which help organize DNA and regulate gene activity, with the goal of understanding how these machines work and how defects in them can contribute to disease.

To answer these questions, the team develops new experimental and computational tools to study chromatin and gene regulation across molecular, genomic, and time scales. These tools will benefit not only their own research but also others studying genome regulation and human disease.

Meet Monique Henry, a stage IV appendiceal cancer survivor, advocate and Clinical Trials Community Scientist at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.

Monique understands how much cancer can affect a person, their family, and their community. Her experience with cancer turned into a reason to help others, not just a personal journey.

Today, Monique’s work focuses on early detection and helping more people access cancer screenings, clinical trials, and life-saving care. When she learned about the lack of participation in medical research, especially in African American communities, she decided to use her voice and experience to help change that.

As a Clinical Trials Community Scientist, Monique shares her perspective as both a patient and an advocate in cancer research.

Her advocacy goes further. Monique mentors people who are newly diagnosed with cancer and partners with organizations to offer free cancer screenings in local communities.

For Monique, advocacy means using her experience to take action and help others have a better cancer journey.
