Congratulations to our very own Dr. Schaaf for earning the Patient's Voice Award.

Dr. Schaaf is one of 66 outstanding Nebraska Medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants being recognized with a 2026 Patient's Voice Award. This award is based solely on feedback from clinic patients who responded to the patient experience survey in 2024 and 2025. Over these 24 months, and with at least 30 survey responses, she earned and maintained a 5.0 rating.

Thank you, Dr. Schaaf, for exemplifying the provider-patient relationship and for your ongoing commitment to excellence in your medical practice.

We’re excited to welcome our Chair, Ronald Krueger, MD, back after an incredible trip to Taiwan and South Korea with fellow leaders from University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC)!

The visit was filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and opportunities to strengthen global partnerships in healthcare and education. And in between the busy schedule, there was even a little time to experience the culture, cuisine, and energy that make both countries so unique.

We’re excited to bring back fresh ideas and inspiration as we continue advancing our mission at UNMC—both locally and globally.

On March 28th, Truhlsen Eye Institute had the privilege of attending the 26th Annual Black Families Health and Wellness Association Health Fair.

The team performed a record number of screenings this year!
Led by our dynamic faculty champion, Dr. Armstrong, and extraordinary diagnostician, Kendall Schmidt, the team not only provided vision screenings but also slit-lamp exams, dilated fundus exams with EyeNuk AI-assisted retinal imaging, and even virtual reality HVF testing.

We also had Lamar’s donuts, courtesy of Sarah Ingraham 😋, and distributed safety glasses from Eye on July.

Thanks again to Dr. Armstrong and Kendall Schmidt for organizing and leading our most successful health fair yet!

“It was awful, but good.”

When you have a disease as rare as the one Mark Moore has, you wouldn't think he'd be smiling. But thanks to a dream team of specialists, including ophthalmologist Dr. Rao Chundury, Mark is hiking, traveling and sending photos to his doctors from Yosemite National Park.

Mark has a rare blood cancer called Erdheim-Chester Disease. It's so rare, only around 1000 cases have been diagnosed since its discovery in 1930. But providers in oncology, hematology, ophthalmology, cardiology, otolaryngology, pathology and cardiac electrophysiology worked together to help him.

Today, he takes targeted therapy in the form of a pill that lets him travel and live his life without being tethered to a clinic.
