💙Possible trigger warning💙
There are moments that remind us how vital maternal mental health truly is.
The weeks and months after childbirth can be filled with joy—but they can also bring anxiety, depression, obsessive thoughts, fear, rage, or feelings that don’t match what a new mother expected. These experiences are more common than many realize, and they are treatable.
To every mother: if you don’t feel like yourself, if you’re struggling, if you’re having frightening thoughts, or if you’re simply surviving instead of living—you deserve care. You deserve to be heard. Asking for help is an act of strength, not failure.
And to my fellow healthcare providers: let’s continue to listen carefully when women tell us something isn’t right. Let’s look beyond “you’re just tired” or “that’s normal.” Let’s ask the extra question. Sit for the extra minute. Believe women when they say they are struggling. Sometimes the most important intervention we provide isn’t a prescription—it’s making someone feel seen, heard, and safe enough to tell us the truth.
As midwives, we care for more than pregnancies and births. We care for women.
May we continue to create spaces where mothers know they can speak honestly without fear of judgment—and where asking for help is met with compassion, urgency, and hope.
💙 If you or someone you love is struggling after having a baby, you are not alone. Help is available, and healing is possible. The first step is reaching out for help.
