Come and join us this coming Saturday at Veterans Park in West Salem. We will talking about what we do for the wildlife in our surrounding area. Plenty of pictures of some of those we have helped grow and recover and continue to thrive back in the wild. Come meet our educational ambassadors. Planning on bringing 4 critters that you will hear their story and see up close.
2:00 at shelter 2.
If you can’t make this one we will be out at Goose Island in a couple weeks.

Release day for our last group of ducklings. Haven’t counted, but I’m guessing we rehabbed close to 200 ducklings this year and here go the last of them into a nice pond full of duck w**d. A couple Woodducks and the rest Mallards. Enjoy your freedom little ones.

A nice caring family down in the DeSoto area found this young Red Tailed Hawk in their yard not doing very well. They called around and finally were able to get it to us. The Hawk was too young to be on its own yet. I can only guess it jumped the nest early due to the small biting flies as it had sores around its neck consistent with them biting. The Hawk came in the same time as two young Barred owls. As they were all young ones they got to be roommates in the enclosure and then flight cage. This helps them learn from each other. Once this Hawk named “Carl” from the finders. lol began catching prey it was time to take him home. The family came out to watch the release and sent me their video. Be safe out there Carl. Yuki is growing fast. She is incredibly smart and so full of energy.
She will be joining in on our wildlife education programs in the community and surrounding area.
Lots to learn yet. And I do mean me. She’s training me well. lol

Cuteness Overload coming your way.
I’d love to introduce the newest member of our Educational Ambassador program. Please meet “Yuki” she is what is called a white marble fox. She came to us from a Game Farm breeder. I’d like to say we rescued each other. I do believe she is an albino even thou they say no.
Let’s learn about this little gal.
White marble foxes are captive-bred color morphs of the red fox. Years ago, they were cross bred with the silver fox (a melanistic version, which is a rare, dark mutant) and got different color variations. A lot of selective breeding has gone into making them, so they’ve become domestic-looking, but they’re still foxlike when it comes to looking after them. "Marble" refers to a specific genetic mutation causing pale coats with dark markings, while "albino" means a total lack of melanin. Albino marble kits are extremely rare, heavily reliant on captive care, and differ fundamentally from standard red or Arctic fox.
From my research on the Marble breed, she has no dark coloration at all including her nose which should be a dark color. Albinism is rare and makes her all the more special.
She came to me coated in dried on formula and on the small size for her age. Lots of cleaning and love and she’s a new little fox full of energy and WAY too smart for MY own good. She just turned 8 weeks old today and already knows her name, to come, and to sit. We will start her with target training very soon and she will be joining us at our programs to teach the community about wild animals and what we do here at the shelter.

Happy National skunk day. Oh Flower we miss you so much. You were such a sweet girl and loved by many.

National Skunk Day is celebrated annually on June 14th. In 2026, it falls on a Sunday. The day highlights the often misunderstood creatures, emphasizing their vital role in the ecosystem as highly effective pest control for lawns and gardens.

Come join me today at Perrot State Park. Learn what we do in our wildlife center at the Coulee Region Humane Society. Unfortunately they have listed to meet Flower but as you know she unexpectedly passed away in December. I have decided to retire Tater. (Story on him to come) However I will be introducing Waffles the new opossum. Learn how she came to us, Amelia the Flying squirrel, and Mojo the Everglade Rat Snake will also make their appearance.
It will be at the Interpretive (nature) center at 4:00 this afternoon. Help support our mission to help our native wildlife in need.
