π Congratulations to James Harris, RN, Unit Nurse, for being selected as our June Whatever It Takes Champion! π James was nominated by a teammate, who shared:
π¬ "There are two types of listeners β those who listen to respond, and those who listen to understand. Listening to understand is one of the highest forms of communication. James consistently listens with the right mindset. He is fully present, pays attention to both verbal and nonverbal cues, and ensures that his patients feel heard, acknowledged, and valued. While I have witnessed this time and time again, one particular situation stands out as a perfect example of Whatever It Takes truly means. A patient expressed concern about swelling in her leg following hip surgery. While some swelling after surgery would not have been unexpected, he took the time to truly listen to her concerns. He listened to understand. Because he took the time to hear what the patent was saying, he looked further into the situation and took the next step by initiating an order for an ultrasound to rule out a DVT. As it turned out, the patient did indeed have a blood clot. Thanks to his attentiveness, critical thinking, and willingness to take action, the clot was identified and addressed before the patent underwent another scheduled surgery, which has now been postponed. This situation could have easily been overlooked, but because he chose to listen, advocate, and do whatever it took for his patent, a potentially serious medical issue was discovered in time."
Thank you, James, for being part of our care team. We greatly appreciate you! π
