Suffix Sort = Big Learning! 🌟

One small suffix can completely change the meaning of a word. That’s why we don’t just teach students to memorize words we teach them to understand how words work.

In this lesson, students sorted words by the suffixes -ful, -less, and -ness, discovering how each suffix changes the meaning of a base word:
• -ful = full of (hopeful)
• -less = without (hopeless)
• -ness = a state or condition (kindness)

Teaching morphology (the study of meaningful word parts) is a critical part of structured literacy. Research shows that understanding prefixes, suffixes, and base words helps students:
✔️ Decode unfamiliar words
✔️ Expand vocabulary
✔️ Improve spelling
✔️ Strengthen reading comprehension
✔️ Build confidence when tackling multisyllabic words

ABC Fluency: One of the Most Important Building Blocks for Reading 🍪🔤

Who knew learning the alphabet could be this sweet? Sometimes all it takes is a few ABC cookies to turn important practice into a fun, memorable learning experience!

Knowing the alphabet isn't just about singing the ABC song. True alphabet fluency means children can quickly recognize a letter, name it, and connect it to its sound without hesitation.

For students with dyslexia, this skill is essential because it helps build the automatic letter-sound connections needed for accurate reading, spelling, and writing. When letter recognition becomes effortless, the brain has more energy to focus on decoding words and understanding what is being read.

Writing on windows instantly increases engagement while giving students meaningful practice with important spelling concepts.

In this lesson, we’re sorting words by the spelling patterns au and aw to strengthen orthographic mapping and help students recognize when each pattern is used.

An important comprehension skill we teach in dyslexia therapy is finding and using text evidence.

Students with dyslexia often spend so much energy decoding words that it can be difficult to remember details or explain their thinking. Rather than guessing or relying on memory, we teach students to go back into the passage, highlight key information, and support every answer with evidence from the text.

This simple strategy helps students:
📖 Strengthen reading comprehension
💙 Build confidence in their answers
✏️ Learn to think critically about what they read
🎯 Develop skills they will use in the classroom and on assessments
