“Don’t lose hope.”

After trying nine different medications for treatment-resistant depression, Dr. Jim Ellwood decided to explore ketamine therapy at Keta Medical Center.

In a recent conversation with Kevin Pho, MD, Dr. Ellwood shared his experience as both an anesthesiologist very familiar with ketamine and a patient who found himself looking for a way to treat his depression.

His biggest takeaway? Ketamine is a powerful medication that can be life-changing for long-time sufferers of TRD. But where and how it’s administered matters.

At Keta Medical Center, patients are evaluated and treated in a medically-supervised setting with an individualized care plan.

🎧 Hear more of Dr. Ellwood’s story and his perspective on ketamine therapy in the full KevinMD podcast.

Ketamine therapy is being studied as a potential option for people whose anxiety has not improved enough with traditional treatments.

Unlike many first-line medications, ketamine works through the brain’s glutamate system and may support neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new, healthier neural connections. Some studies have reported rapid reductions in anxiety symptoms, but research is still evolving, and ketamine remains an off-label treatment for anxiety.

It is not a first-line treatment or the right option for everyone. At Keta Medical Center, each patient receives a thorough evaluation based on their diagnosis, treatment history, and overall health.

Ketamine therapy is supported by a growing body of research, including thousands of scientific papers and hundreds of clinical trials focused on depression.

For patients who have not experienced enough relief from traditional treatments, this research points to a different approach that may offer meaningful improvement. Response and remission rates reflect outcomes across study populations, but individual results can vary.

Spravato® is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression who have not experienced enough relief from traditional antidepressants.

Unlike many conventional medications, Spravato works through the brain’s glutamate system and may support neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form and reorganize neural connections. Some patients notice improvement early in treatment, while others experience changes gradually throughout the induction phase.

Spravato is administered in a clinical setting under medical supervision, with each treatment plan adjusted according to the patient’s response and medical history.

For some patients, ketamine therapy may lead to meaningful changes beyond an improvement in mood.

Clinical improvements may include reduced depressive symptoms, fewer intrusive or suicidal thoughts, increased energy and motivation, and a renewed ability to connect with people and everyday activities. These changes can look different for each patient, and individual results and timelines vary.

At Keta Medical Center, treatment begins with a personalized evaluation and is provided in a controlled clinical setting under physician supervision.
