Most people recognize swelling when they see it in their feet or ankles, but there is something called hidden edema that you can't see on the surface. This is swelling that happens deeper in your tissues or even around your organs, and it can make breathing harder or affect how well your heart pumps. Often, it comes down to an electrolyte imbalance, like having too little potassium or sodium. It’s a big reason why extreme diets can be risky; keeping those electrolytes balanced is vital for your heart and lungs to do their jobs.

Stress doesn't affect everyone the same way. I see some people who can't stop eating when they're stressed, and others whose appetite completely shuts down. Both patterns can cause your health to shift in ways that aren't ideal, like causing your glucose to crash or changing your metabolism. If you can identify your pattern and share it with me or your doctor, it helps us understand how your body might react to certain medications. I hear it all the time: 'Roger, I ate perfectly today, but my blood sugar is still through the roof.' Usually, the culprit isn't the food, it's stress. When you're rushing, worrying, or dealing with conflict, your body pumps out hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, and those push your glucose higher even if you haven't eaten a thing. It can even drive cravings or change how your metabolism works. If we want to get your numbers under control, we have to talk about managing the stress just as much as we talk about managing the carbs. Roger that!

Pharmacists do a lot more than just fill bottles; we are trained to look at the whole picture of your health. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve caught a dose that was a bit too high or a combination of drugs that just wasn't safe for a patient's specific condition. When we have the time to really consult with you and look at your history, we catch those serious errors before they ever leave the pharmacy. Consultation isn't just an 'extra' service, it's how we save lives.

We see quite a few children, and even some adults, who just can't swallow a traditional pill without panicking. When that happens, I usually suggest an oral disintegrating tablet. It’s this tiny, sugar-based tablet that just melts right in your mouth. Because it dissolves so quickly and is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, it often works faster since it bypasses the liver at the start. Erica in my lab is excellent at converting these, and it makes a world of difference for people with throat issues or a strong gag reflex. Roger that!

People often ask if compounding is the same as changing a prescription. In a way, it is, because we are changing the form of the medication, like turning a capsule into a liquid or a dissolvable tablet. Because of that, I’m always in close contact with your doctor. I’ll call them up and explain that a patient is struggling to swallow or needs a different delivery method. Most doctors trust us because they know we understand the chemistry behind the drug, and they're usually happy to approve the change to make sure you're actually getting the treatment you need.
