UCI PFAS Health Study

UCI PFAS Health Study A study to learn how drinking water that contains PFAS chemicals affects health in Orange County, CA UCI IRB #20205839, CDC IRB #7207.

Seeking adults of all ages and children aged 4-17, of any race/ethnicity, to participate in this research study! People who lived in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, or Yorba Linda, CA during any part of 2000 to 2019 may be eligible. Adults will receive up to $50 and children will receive up to $75 for participating in the study with a parent. Participants will be asked questions about their work an

d home, the water they drink, and their health. Participants do not have to consume tap water to be eligible. Participants will also give a blood and urine sample, and have body measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist and hip size, and blood pressure) made by health workers at UCI. For child participants, we will also ask about social behaviors, emotions, memory, and learning. Participants will find out what their PFAS blood levels are, and how they compare to others in the U.S. This study will contribute to everyone’s understanding of nationwide exposures to PFAS and their potential effects on health. An important new study linking PFAS exposure to a nearly 3-fold increase in infant mortality was published today. If replicated by studies in other places, it tells us that we need to do much more, much sooner, to protect children from these toxic chemicals! But there are some big limitations to this study--including that the exposures were not quite as random as claimed by the authors, and that it was based on a very small number of deaths (56), making the study underpowered and perhaps statistically unreliable. But the findings of this small study are alarming enough that it should be followed up with other studies, to see if similar patterns emerge elsewhere. In the meantime, if there's PFAS in your water supply don't wait--take action now by using water filters or switching to PFAS-free bottled water. Whether or not PFAS contamination of drinking water is killing babies, there's plenty of evidence that PFOA, PFOS, or PFHxS exposure can cause other health problems.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) will host a virtual open house to provide updates on the PFAS Multi-site Study (MSS) on July 28, 2025, from 5:00pm-6:45pm EDT. Please find the Microsoft Teams link below.

During the open house, CDC/ATSDR will discuss the recently published manuscript, Multi-Site Study of Communities with PFAS-Contaminated Drinking Water: Methods, Demographics, and Serum PFAS Concentrations.

Investigators from each of the MSS sites will provide early findings on PFAS exposure and health effects including lipids, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, thyroid, and obesity. These findings are preliminary and may change as manuscripts are finalized.

Due to the size of the meeting and platform limitations, we will only be able to answer study-related questions that are submitted in advance. We are not able to answer individual health/medical questions.
