GOVERNOR LAMONT ACTIVATES EXTREME HOT WEATHER PROTOCOL FROM TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY
11:00 a.m. July 14th through 5:00 p.m. July 16, 2026

Cooling Centers Will Open and Can be Located by Visiting www.211ct.org or Calling 2-1-1

Some prevention tips to stay safe in extreme heat include:

• Keep your body temperature cool to avoid heat-related illness.
• Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. If you must be outdoors, try to limit your outdoor activity to the morning and evening. Try to rest often in shady areas so that your body has a chance to cool off.
• Find an air-conditioned location. (Call 2-1-1 for a list of cooling centers.) Do not rely on a fan as your primary cooling device.
• Avoid direct sunlight.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Take cool showers or baths.
• Check on those most at-risk several times a day.
• Pets that cannot be brought indoors should be provided ready access to water and shade to keep them cool.
• Never leave pets inside of parked vehicles because temperatures can soar to life-threatening levels within minutes.

Everyone is also reminded to stay hydrated during periods of extreme heat. As we lose fluid through sweat, dehydration is common during very high temperatures. It is strongly encouraged to:

• Drink more water than usual.
• Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink more fluids.
• Drink two to four cups of water every hour while working or exercising outside.
• Avoid alcohol or liquids containing high amounts of sugar.
• Remind others to drink enough water.

Today marks 6 years since Tim Borer accepted the challenge and was promoted to Deputy Fire Marshal.

Tim started in our office as a Fire Insoector on January 21, 2019. Since that day, he has proven himself time and time again as to just how much of an amazing addition to our office he was.

You would think that accepting a more challenging position during the height of Covid was daring enough, it was just the start. Our office was turned upside down with the unfortunate passing of Fire Marshal Tim Smith and unexpected retirement of one of our Fire Inspectors leaving us with only 2 of us in enforcement and investigations and our Administrative Assistant Beverly. We had a long road ahead, and Tim stepped up and helped build our office back up from the ground to what it is today.

In 2023, Tim also accepted the opportunity presented by First Selectman Zeoli to take on an additional role as Emergency Management Director; yet another job he has absolutely excelled at!

There isn’t a day where you can’t hear the words, “Thank god we got Borer!”. Whether it’s his insight on issues, his quick wit, or the fact that any time an issue comes up he’s the first to say, “You want me to take that?”, he never backs away from work.

Tim, on this 6th anniversary of your promotion to Deputy Fire Marshal, I want to thank you on behalf of not just our office but the entire Town of Orange for everything you do. I look forward to many more years of laughs and hard work with you!

Jamie
