The UC Irvine Kidney Stone Center takes a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to kidney stone disease, focusing not only on treatment but also on prevention. This includes collaboration across different specialties to address all aspects of stone formation.
In addition to medications and supplements, care also considers nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, and overall well-being, since these factors can all influence kidney stone risk. The goal is to treat the whole patient, not just the stones.

Traditionally, surgery involved large incisions, but at UC Irvine we use minimally invasive techniques to treat even large kidney stones. This means procedures can often be done through very small incisions, helping reduce recovery time and postoperative discomfort.
The goal is to get patients back home sooner, back to work and daily activities faster, and back to the things they enjoy with less pain and disruption after surgery.

While kidney stones affect about 10% of the population, some patients have rare forms of kidney stone disease that require a more specialized approach. Our evaluation may include genetic testing and detailed urine testing to better understand the underlying causes and identify the specific metabolic factors contributing to stone formation.

This allows for more personalized treatment strategies aimed at reducing the risk of future kidney stone episodes. 🧬

Large kidney stones are often treated using a percutaneous approach, which involves a small keyhole incision to access the kidney directly. This allows for the removal of large stones, including those that are pea-sized or even golf ball-sized. Recovery is typically well tolerated, with about half of patients able to go home the same day and return to normal activities, including work, within one to two weeks. 🪨

What if kidney stone care meant fewer surgeries and fewer recurrences?

At UC Irvine, our 50+ ongoing clinical trials are focused on exactly that: improving care, reducing procedures, and helping patients avoid future stone events.

We’ve partnered with engineering experts to develop technology that dramatically improves surgical safety, while also exploring holistic treatment options that go beyond traditional medications.

Many patients who undergo kidney stone surgery are surprised to learn that stones can still recur if underlying causes are not addressed. At the Kidney Stone Center at UC Irvine, we take a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to understand why certain patients form specific types of stones. By identifying these risk factors, we can tailor prevention strategies aimed at reducing recurrence and helping make a first stone episode less likely to happen again.

Can robotic surgery improve kidney stone removal?

We were the first institution to adopt a robotic approach for kidney stone treatment. This allows us to treat both large stones through a posterior approach and precisely target even the smallest stone fragments within the kidney.

The goal: maximize stone clearance and help reduce the risk of future episodes.
