A concussion doesn’t always look dramatic—and an athlete does not have to lose consciousness to have one.
Common concussion symptoms can include:
• Headache
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Difficulty concentrating or remembering
• Vision changes
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fatigue or irritability
• Feeling confused, slowed down, or “foggy”
• Changes in mood or behavior
Some symptoms aren’t obvious from the sidelines, which is why athletes need to speak up when something doesn’t feel right after a hit, fall, or collision. Trying to “tough it out” can put an athlete at risk for another injury before the brain has had time to recover.
If a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be removed from play immediately and should not return to sports until they have been medically evaluated and cleared by a healthcare professional experienced in concussion management.
