Meet Chris Otten, the new head chef of Rady Children’s Health’s Culinary Medicine Program in Orange County.

As a father of five, Chris has always believed food is a way to care for and connect with family. That belief became deeply personal when his 3-year-old nephew, John, was diagnosed with leukemia. During treatment, Chris helped his family navigate changing taste preferences and nutrition challenges, even creating a healthy "Ninja Turtle Pasta" to make mealtime more enjoyable for his nephew. Today, John is in remission, but the experience continues to inspire Chris’s work.

Now, Chris brings that same passion to Rady Children’s, helping children and families build healthy relationships with food through education, hands-on cooking experiences and nutritious recipes.

What was supposed to be a family vacation turned into a month-long hospitalization for 8-year-old Bradley. While visiting Southern California from Chicago with his parents, Bradley experienced sudden breathing difficulties and was rushed to Rady Children’s Hospital Orange County, where he was diagnosed with necrotizing pneumonia.

Bradley developed severe complications that prevented him from returning home. Fortunately, Rady Children’s advanced bronchoscopy team was able to use a minimally invasive procedure to seal the air leak in his lung, shortening his recovery time and likely helping him avoid surgery. Despite being nearly 2,000 miles from home, nurses, respiratory therapists, child life specialists and social workers went above and beyond to support the Mueller family, making a difficult and unexpected stay feel less overwhelming.

Now 9 years old, Bradley is back home and thriving. He's earning straight A's in school and playing guard on his travel basketball team. Read his full story at the link below!
