We are excited to welcome Dr. Alden Smith as our second clinical Laryngologist!

Born in Colorado, Dr. Smith joins us after serving for several years as faculty at Loma Linda University. He completed his undergraduate degree at BYU with a Bachelor of Music in Sound Recording Technology and a minor in Mathematics. He began his medical training at Temple University, where he received his MD degree, and went on to complete his residency training in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at UCLA and his Laryngology fellowship training at Stanford.

While his practice spans the full breadth of laryngology, his specific clinical interests are in the management of neurogenic cough, dysphagia in head & neck cancer survivors, and surgical management of upper airway stenosis. His presence will expand our services to help patients in North Orange County, Los Angeles County, and San Bernardino / Riverside County patients. He is our 20th faculty member in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.

Congratulations to Dr. Harrison Lin and department research scientist Matthew Richardson, PhD, on receiving an R01 grant for their project, “Cochlear-Implant Pitch Perception Enhanced by a Penetrating Auditory-Nerve Electrode.”

Their research will explore new approaches to improving pitch perception for cochlear implant users and advancing the future of hearing technology.

🎙️ Dr. Abouzari co-moderated a session on "Measurement of Tinnitus" alongside the esteemed Dr. Jae-Jin Song — bringing together global expertise to advance how we understand and assess tinnitus.

Dr. Tjoson Tjoa, Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, has been awarded funding through the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) Pilot Awards supported by the Anti-Cancer Challenge – 2025. Serving as co-principal investigator, Dr. Tjoa is part of a multidisciplinary team working to develop a spatial genomics-based platform to map neural-tumor interactions in head and neck cancer.

The project, titled “Establishing a Spatial-Genomics Based Cancer Neuroscience Platform to Map Neural-Tumor Interactions in Human Cancers,” was selected to receive $56,725 in funding. Led in collaboration with Xiangmin Xu, PhD, Chancellor’s Professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology and Director of the Center for Neural Circuit Mapping, the research aims to deepen our understanding of how nerves and tumors interact within the cancer microenvironment. The team hopes this pilot project will generate the foundational data needed to pursue future National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) funding, further advancing innovative approaches to cancer research and treatment.

One of the most powerful things we can do as scientists is make our work accessible — not just to other researchers, but to the curious young minds who will become the next generation of doctors, scientists, and problem-solvers. Translating complex science into a language that kids can understand is not just an exercise in simplicity — it is an act of inclusion. This publication is also a shining example of what mentorship can do. One of our co-first authors, Katelyn Tran, was a high schooler who took on this manuscript as her summer project at the ENTelligence Lab. Katelyn, we are so incredibly proud of you and everything you have already accomplished! 👏
