Most parents don’t realize that rough-and-tumble play is doing far more than burning off energy.
When kids wrestle, chase, climb, jump, and play, they’re constantly learning where their body is in space, how to react to changing situations, how to regulate big emotions, and how to recover when things feel challenging.
In other words, they’re training their nervous system.
That’s why healthy challenge is so important.
A resilient nervous system isn’t built by avoiding every hard thing. It’s built by experiencing challenge, adapting to it, and learning that you’re okay on the other side.
This is one reason dad play is so valuable.
Not because it’s rough, because it’s challenging in a safe, connected environment.
So dads, keep wrestling! Keep building forts. Keep chasing your kids around the backyard.
You’re doing more than making memories. You’re helping build resilience!
And if your child seems stuck in fight-or-flight instead of adapting and recovering well, we’d love to help.
