From panic to stage presence.

She used to shake before every recital. Now she walks on stage with a calmer breath and a stronger focus.

That change didn’t happen by chance. It happened with the right tools, steady support, and a plan that actually works.

Class starts in five weeks. The students in my Psychology of Music Performance class show up on the first day full of hope and fears. As new tools are mastered their fears are replaced by excitement and confidence. The hope turns into possibilities.

That is why I keep teaching performing artists the mental skills of peak performance. If you want to be on the path from stage fright to flow, DM me and I will share with you the Peak Performers Profile. You will quickly see the mental skills you have, and the skills that you are missing. You can also visit drjonskidmore.com ✨

The question I get asked more than any other:

"Dr. Skidmore, can you actually teach someone to love performing again?"

And my honest answer is: I don't teach them to love it. I help them remember that they already do.

Every student who comes to me dreading the stage started somewhere different. They started excited. Curious. Willing to be seen.

Somewhere along the way, the pressure of performance started outweighing the joy of it.

My job is to help them rebuild the relationship between who they are as a musician and what happens when they step into the spotlight.

That's what 30 years of teaching the Psychology of Music performance has taught me. When the love of performing gets lost it takes some excavation and courage to find it. But it's there!

If you're a parent watching your child shrink from the stage, or a teacher who wants to give students more than technique — I'd love to talk.

There's a moment I've seen in 30 years of teaching that still gets me every time.

It's not the standing ovation. It's not the trophy.

It's the split second after a performer finishes — when they realize they were fully present. Fully in it. Not watching themselves, not managing their nerves.

Just performing.

That's flow. And it's not magic. It's Stage 4 of the Five Stages of Peak Performance.

Flow doesn't happen by accident. It's the natural result of doing Stages 1 through 3 well: clarity of purpose, honest preparation, and intentional pre-performance routine.

When those are in place, your nervous system can finally let go and trust the work you've put in.

The best performances of your life aren't ahead of you waiting to happen. They're waiting to be built.

DM and I will send you an enlightening survey. "The Peak Performers Profile." You need to know your score!

Risk. Fail. Risk Again!

I didn't learn confidence first. I learned courage.

I remember standing at the edge of a stage awaiting my audition, heart pounding and filled with doubts and hope.

But I showed up anyway.

For over 30 I watched performers wrestle with that same moment. The shaking hands. The racing thoughts. The voice that whispers, "What if I'm not ready?"

Here's what I've learned: confidence is the reward. Courage is the door.

You don't wait until you feel ready. You step up, do the work, and let the stage teach you who you are.

That's the whole journey. 🎹

If you're a performer, parent, or teacher who wants to help someone find that courage, I'd love to talk.
