As some of you know, I’ve been battling a c**n problem again. In 2 weeks I’ve lost at least half of my flock, mostly chicken but ducks too. Estimating a loss of about 30-40 birds, with some instances losing 10+ in one night. Birds were both eaten and killed for sport (left whole). I’ve been beyond distressed with sadness and guilt for having failed my birds. They are terrified and refuse to roost in the coop or run at night— which creates other issues.
While I continue to navigate this situation, I have to begin rebuilding for next year. I incubated some, bought some, ordered a bunch that I’ll arrive later this month and was gifted some guinea fowl.
This hobby isn’t for the faint of heart, and I re-learn every season what fowl husbandry demands of my mind and emotions. Stressful and exhausting at times, it’s also rewarding and a beautiful way to connect with nature. Definitely a love-hate situation.
