How do you turn the brain's electrical activity into something a clinician can actually use? That is the promise of QEEG, or quantitative EEG.
A 2026 review in Frontiers in Neuroscience lays out where QEEG stands as a neurodiagnostic tool. By quantifying EEG patterns and comparing them to normative data, QEEG can help characterize the neurophysiology behind a clinical presentation: connectivity patterns in neurodevelopmental conditions, frontal alpha asymmetry in mood disorders, and shifts linked to cognitive aging. It can also help personalize interventions, including neurofeedback, rTMS, and tDCS.
The authors are measured about it. They describe QEEG as a valuable adjunctive tool, one that complements clinical judgment rather than replacing it. That framing matters. Used well, QEEG moves assessment from behavior alone toward objective, brain-based measurement.
