Your baby has their primitive startle reflex for protection.

But it can be a nuisance for sleep if the reflex is overactive or the body hasn’t learned how to work its way through the reflex and come out of fight or flight.

This reflex integrates over time, and it’s our job has parents (and providers) to help baby’s body learn where it is in and space and time to help it along the way.

How do we do this? Unrestricted MOVEMENT!

1. More time on the belly! By the time your baby is 1 month old, we should be at around 20min of tummy time daily - broken into small bits they can tolerate during their 5 min wake windows. This can be done on your chest, laying all the way back for more of a challenge for your little one.

By 2 months - 40min
By 3 months - 60min

MORE TUMMY TIME DURING THE DAY = BETTER SLEEP 😴

We often see little ones for feeding difficulty, but they also have sleep issues, difficulty p**ping, trapped gas, reflux symptoms, body tension, flat spots forming on their little heads, and when we ask about tummy time - it’s always below the recommendation. OR they’re doing it, but not quite sure how to make it the most effective.

2. Side lying play! Practicing laying on their side while looking at black and white cards, listening to crinkle paper, fisher price aquarium (IYKYK), and assisted rolling in and out of tummy time can be a GAME CHANGER! It brings body awareness and helps relieve tension and calm that startle reflex.

We’re Baby Bliss | Integrative Feeding Support - your trusted team of nurses, pediatric therapists, IBCLCs and feeding experts, ready to help you find the confidence in your parenting journey and calmness along the way 💕

1. Head turn preference - when baby is in their car seat, laying in the bassinet, or someone’s arms - do they tend to look one direction most often? OR do they prefer nursing on one breast over the other?

2. Fi**ed hands that are hard to open - trapping “lint”, turning colors from holding too tight?

3. Unable to mold into you when holding them up - head stays up, stiff as a board.

4. Deep pink/red creases in their neck folds, armpits, arm rolls, groin, or leg rolls. When you open the neck to “clean it” there’s that “baby cheese” 🧀 smell and it looks like they’re saving lint for later. It’s actually accumulated skin cells and those need room to breathe!

5. Unable to comfortably lie FLAT on their back. Their little bodies make a “C” shaped curve, they roll before their time, and are not a fan of diaper changes or rides in the car seat.

Have we just described your baby?

Truth is - all babies are both with some level of tension. They came from the womb, they were squished, what do you expect?

But we often see extra tension and these symptoms when baby was breech or transverse for a period of time, if they were born with Torticollis, or they had a difficult labor.

Some things you can do as parents to help your little one unwind 😌

1. Skin to skin, let them sprawl out on your chest. Let their legs begin to extend from their froggy fetal position.

2. Unswaddle - if we don’t need it for sleep within the first two weeks, we don’t truly need it. Wean BEFORE its time to roll so they can practice those movements and bring to integrate that startle reflex. Ask any peds OT/PT. Theres a time and a place for swaddle, and it phase out by 6 weeks.

3. Tummy time - the way we calm the reflect is by spending more time on our tummy! We unwind feeding muscles by being on our tummy also.

⭐️BONUS: ⭐️ Reserve your spot for our Infant Massage class where you and your baby can relax, unwind, find relief for upset tummies, help with p**ping, and learn the rhythmic movements in real time!

Parents take our Infant CPR Choking and First Aid Class for TWO ✌🏼 reasons.

1. To educate themselves to protect their babies

2. To educate others they entrust with protecting their babies

Knowing CPR is not only useful when baby is on the move and can put big brother’s Lego in his mouth.

But it’s also helpful to know what to do if your baby chokes on Milk! Yup - at the breast or bottle, it can happen.

If they choke on their solid foods as they transition while they are learning.

And if you’re going to leave your baby in the care of another AT SOME POINT, they should know what to do in an emergency as well!

We prepare so we don’t panic and become ineffective in an emergency. 💕

Parents sign up and bring the grand parents, the nanny, the care giver, the older siblings and more so we can all learn how to care for our littles together!

Class is held on one Saturday per linen, in order to accommodate busy parent schedules.

Reserve your spot today and share this with the person you want to bring!

You can see baby’s “reset” like his Ahhh 😮‍💨 😌 moment when everything felt right again in his little body 🥹

This is Craniosacral Therapy.

It is a skilled technique that is osteopathic in nature. It uses gentle touch to decrease tension in the body, regulate the nervous system and get things flowing…(💩 if you know, you know 😉)

This little guy had lots of tummy discomfort, gassiness, reflux from swallowing air with his latch but also some food sensitivities. He had some tension in his body that was affecting his feeding, sleep, play and p**ping.

So this mama booked a consult with Miss Annette, our RN IBCLC of over 35 years and Upledger Trained in Craniosacral Therapy (CST). And the visit looked something like this:

1. Introduction with mom and baby, asking history and what mama’s goals are for feeding and baby’s relief.

2. Baby’s assessment - head to toe, checking reflexes, oral function, and even checking anatomy inside the mouth.

3. Feeding assessment - helped with latch, positioning, measured milk transfer, pumping, fl**ge sizing and getting mom and baby comfortable and confident with the feeding routine.

4. Assessed mom for cracks, blisters, bruising, scabbing, clogs, engorgement, vasospasms and more. Discussed milk supply, mom’s medical history and goals for supply.

5. Bodywork - CST, head to toe, to help baby regulate their sensory system. Getting his head (cranial) to body (sacral) natural rhythm flowing again.

6. Mom regulated, affirmed, encouraged, and baby relaxed and fed, with plan for follow up with our collaborative team.

All in 60min or less.

If you’re having difficulty in these areas, and want to know if CST is right for your family - reach out to our team at Baby Bliss | Integrative Feeding Support . Our crew is ready to help you and baby feel the level of this little guy’s relief!
