It's important to check on boys. Disordered eating and body image can impact boys just as much as girls. The push to be bigger, stronger, more fit can lead boys to make dangerous decisions for their growing body and brain.

Eating disorders among boys are often overlooked, but the numbers tell a different story.

Hospitalizations for eating disorders among boys have increased by approximately 400% since 2002 (Smith et al., 2023).

Yet boys are less likely to be diagnosed and are often missing from the symptom profiles clinicians use to identify those at risk (Schmitt et al., 2025).

When we think of eating disorders through a narrow lens, we miss young people who need support.

It's time to challenge outdated stereotypes and recognize that eating disorders can affect anyone.

Awareness leads to recognition. Recognition leads to support.

Connection > Correction. đź’ˇ
As parents, our instinct is to fix the behavior right now. But brain science says we’re doing it backward! 🧠

My favorite takeaway from Dr. Daniel Siegel’s The Whole-Brain Child is simple but game-changing: Connect before you Redirect.

When we calm the emotional storm first with connection and understanding, cooperation is more likely to follow. 🛠️❤️

Next Steps: Parenting is hard! You’re a human with needs. Daily life and parenting can be overstimulating and hard to regulate.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a reminder to take a moment for ourselves when we're stressed. Our natural threat response can often lead to fight (self-criticism), flight (isolation), and freeze (rumination). But self-compassion offers a powerful antidote.

By practicing kindness, mindfulness, and connecting with our shared humanity, we downregulate the threat system and activate the care system (the tend and befriend response), reducing stress and fostering resilience.

Research shows that this shift into self-compassion can lower cortisol levels and increase heart rate variability, making us less defensive, calmer, and more balanced.

This month, let’s prioritize mental well-being and show ourselves the kindness we need. Take a pause, place your hand on your heart, and remind yourself that you are worthy of care and compassion.

It's human to desire an apology with the hope that it'll help us move forward. Radical acceptance is a DBT concept where you stop resisting the reality of the situation and begin accepting what is in front of you.
Accepting the reality that someone may never apologize for hurting you can begin to free you from the suffering of waiting for acknowledgment. This is what you can control. Acceptance is NOT condoning what they did, and it's not for that other person, institution, etc. Yes, there's grief that will come and with that a path forward.

This is where engaging in the moment and using your senses can help when the mind is negative or racing. When your mind just won't stop, don't fight it. Get out of your head and into the moment as best you can.
