You got married because you knew each other. So why does married life sometimes make you feel like you're still getting to know your spouse?

Because sharing a life can reveal parts of each other that dating simply didn't.

New routines. New responsibilities. New expectations. New ways of handling stress and conflict.

Swipe through to see why this adjustment is more common than you might think.

Does your spouse shut down every time you try to have a serious conversation?

Maybe you've learned the pattern by heart:

You: “We need to talk.”

Them: “I don't want to do this right now.”

You push for an answer.

They get quieter.

You get more frustrated.

And before long, you're arguing about their silence instead of the issue you wanted to discuss.

This is often called a pursue-withdraw pattern.

Neither person is necessarily trying to hurt the other. But the pattern can leave both partners feeling alone.

Matthew Martin has 15+ years of experience helping couples understand and change communication patterns that keep them stuck.

As a Gottman Method-trained couples therapist, he helps long-term partners build healthier ways to navigate conflict and stay connected.

Does a simple disagreement with your spouse somehow turn into a list of everything they've ever done wrong?

It might start with the dishes.

Then it's:
“You never help.”
“You always do this.”
“You never listen.”

And suddenly, you're no longer solving the problem in front of you. You're defending your entire relationship history.

One small shift can help:
Instead of “You never help me,” try: “I felt overwhelmed handling that alone, and I need more help.”

You're still expressing the problem. You're just giving your partner a chance to hear you instead of immediately defending themselves.

Matthew Martin has 15+ years of experience helping long-term couples recognize destructive communication patterns and develop healthier ways to handle conflict.

If you've had the same argument with your spouse more times than you can count, you're probably not actually fighting about the dishes.

The dishes may be about feeling unsupported.

The money may be about feeling unheard.

The parenting disagreement may be about feeling like you're not on the same team.

And when both partners walk into the conversation already feeling defensive, the same cycle repeats.

Before your next argument, ask: “What am I really trying to get my partner to understand?”

Matthew Martin has 15+ years of experience helping couples recognize these patterns, communicate more effectively, and build healthier ways of handling conflict.

Call (407) 248-0030 to schedule a consultation.

Swipe through the carousel to see how the cycle works and how you can start changing it.
