The questions you almost didn’t ask might be the ones your doctor needs to hear.

You don’t have to have the “right” words. You don’t need to diagnose yourself first. And you definitely don’t need to feel embarrassed.

Tell us what’s going on. We’ll take it from there.

Dr. Kyaw, endocrinologist at UCF Health, uses a surprisingly familiar example (rice used to seal an envelope) to explain what can happen inside our blood vessels over time in his talk at the Learning Institute for Elders at University of Central Florida .

When blood sugar stays elevated, it can contribute to changes in the body’s proteins and blood vessels. Over time, damage to the tiny blood vessels (capillaries) can affect areas such as the eyes, kidneys, hands, and nerves.

Think of it like traffic on a completely congested road: when nothing can move properly, everything downstream is affected.

This is one reason diabetes isn’t just about blood sugar, it’s about protecting your blood vessels and your overall health.

Sometimes, strength doesn't look like pushing through.

Sometimes, it looks like listening to your body.

Rutu's story is a reminder that chronic illness is often invisible, and that compassion, understanding, and the right support can make all the difference.

At UCF Health, we're honored to be part of that support through in-person visits, virtual appointments, or simply being available to answer questions when they matter most. 💜

Be honest: when was your last checkup?

Not the visit where you went in because something was wrong. Not the appointment you made because you had a specific symptom.

A routine checkup.

The kind of appointment that helps you understand where your health stands before something becomes a problem.

If you’ve been putting yours off, this is your sign to stop waiting. 🩺

Florida summer can change your hydration needs. ☀️💧

There’s no single number of glasses that everyone needs each day. Your fluid needs depend on factors like your body, activity level, diet and how much you’re sweating.

And hydration isn’t just about water. Coffee and tea count toward your fluid intake, and fruits and vegetables provide water, too.

But heat, humidity, exercise and prolonged sweating can increase how much fluid you need. And if you’re sweating heavily for an extended period, you may also be losing electrolytes.

So, do you need an electrolyte drink every time you go outside? Not necessarily. For everyday hydration, water and a balanced diet are generally enough for most people.

The goal isn't to drink as much water as possible. It's to replace the fluids your body is actually losing. 💧

Stay hydrated, stay cool and listen to your body this summer.
